I think I've used all the ploys possible to get SWMBO to agree to a larger boat. I'm upsizing from a Cranchi 40 and think it will either be a Squaddie 50 or a Phantom 50. Other than layout, there really doesn't seem to be too much in it? The galley space on the Phantom looks tiny, but the flybridge looks better equipped and larger than the Sqn. Does anyone have any advice with regards to maintenance, handling or any other 'gotcha's'?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Phantom 50. Watch out for flybridge cracks at joint after patio door , early series 1 model had serious structural issues mainly due to insufficient strengthening of flybridge moulding . Look out for leaking front windows , faded facial wood inside, sagging linings. d12 good motor but watch out for drive plate problems on twin disc gearbox version.

I'll throw a spanner in, I prefer the princess 50 mark 1 and 2 , similar money.

There's a few 50 ftrs on my 15 M berth quay-( Obviousley ) -as I walk by,what I notice the most ,is mainly relating to how the owners use the boat in port -let's face it where most spend most of the time is this ---

outside space ,cockpit space .Or lack of it !

Some Ithink the Phantom have very small cockpits aft ( guess the pay off is a bigger saloon ?)
Folks even just 4 huddled round a smallish table ,some on directors chairs -table cluttered
Does not really work in the Med .

So for me I would put outside space near the top of the list
Any reason for not another Cranchi ? --- what's everybody else got on the 15 M berths ?

I think the Cranchi 50 is a bit of an old design, it is a tuned up 48 which was released in 1998.

The problem with the Princess 50 mk.1 and 2 IMO, is that they are under powered with 480s Tamd 74s (early mk1s), and that with the big D12s rode to much bow high above 22 knots.
OTOH the Fairline 50 Phantom runs so good with any engines it was offered D12 675 ot 715.

I think one of the very good boats of this period and size and staying mainstream know it all name is the Azimut 50.

Totally agree on the Cranchi 48, it's quite dated now compared to the Fairlines of the same era. Love the current C40 and I'm keeping it to continue the successful charters with her. We really need the extra space for a large family, and we do use the boat, we never just use her as a gin palace, we're either out to Ibiza/Formentera or up and down the Costa Blanca.

If you are Balearic based I would try in this order Ferretti 53, 500 (a bit more difficult to find in three cabins), and 480.
Yes 53 is bigger but since the model was produced form 1997 till 2007 (from 2005 as 530 with a bit larger profile window and light oak interior), may be you can get a good deal on one of the earlier models.
