Hi

I've just bought my first yacht and the spray hood needs replacing. I've emailed 1 company but have had no reply. The hoops are ok, it's just the material/windows that need replacing.

Any suggestions?

David

Yep, so far nine people have sent their money. Haven't noticed your name amoungst them

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've emailed all the companies but no replies as yet.
Please keep posting--the more the merrier

Thanks

David

Saturn, based at Largs also do sprayhoods. However, why not have a wander around your marina this weekend when theres bound to be owners onboard, if you like the look of one ask who made it for them (or the name and number may be be stictched on it). Consider asking in the local Chandlers for names of reputable companies; surely David at Kip will able to point you in right direction.

Personally I always find it concerning giving business to a company that can't be bothered to phone you back or take ages to get in touch, that said this is quite a busy time of year for sail and marine upholstery companies.

If you do decide to make one yourself, I know for certain that the use of brown paper templates are essential.

Good luck

Arun for sails its what they are each good at.

That is debateable - I've had a Genoa from them which has turned out to be a pretty poor sail. They have shown no interest in trying to help sort out why it is so poorly shaped.

I won't be going back to them again.

She's moored at Holy Loch, at present, so I'll have a trip to 'Kip and Largs + I'll take your advice and have a look around for name tags etc.

Agree with what you say about companies not replying to enquiries. Over the last few days I've sent out many enquiries or requests for quotes and only 1, yes 1 has got back to me. Even if they are busy, I don't think a reply would be out of the way--at least I would know.

I knew there was another Scottish company that I forgot when posting earlier; no recommendation however, but you could try Owen Sails, 01631 720485. There're Oban based, but also operate out of Gourock and Port Edgar and make much more than just sails. Figure they'll probably be in and out of Kip, might even go into Holy Loch Marina. Have a look at www.owensails.com

Price wise well depending upon size and whether or not you incorporate a stainless steel grab handle, it will set you back say £300+ but many variables will influence. I once had a cockpit tent made and including frames it cost in excess of £1K. I'll be looking for one for my Hallberg 29 later this year and may/may not use HR direct. Main issue is colour matching to s/hood and stackpack, so may end up doing more than just the tent - ouch!

Thanks for that Lesley, it gives me a ball park figure.

I can only get a little hood due to the mizzen being in the way for a big job, so if they come back and say it's 1000's rather than hundreds I won't bother. Some of the quotes you get for stuff here are through the roof. You tend to think that the US is cheaper than the UK but it isn't for boaty stuff, More so depending where you are in the States and Newport is well serviced but expensive.

As one yachty said to me, 'they charge you a hundred bucks to say hello around here'.

There is one really economical way to have a decent one made, but it involves a bit of logistics.

I am currently having a custom fit cockpit tent made up - total cost 100 pounds incl. materials. It is being made by a sailmaker in Riga. He also makes sprayhoods - I've seen a couple he made and they look decent, the materials used are from the UK and he takes care over putting it all together (and he will do it even cheaper if you source your own materials, as the materials are much more expensive to buy over there than in the UK). He also repaired a couple of my sails, and the repairs look fine.

The logistical bit is getting him the pattern etc. Easyjet...
