Spot the (new to me) boat

Indeed she is well travelled, she's been to Ireland, Isle of Man, past Oxford, through Paris, I think she may get board in the solent so further runs are planned and photos will be published! She even had a pair of beaching legs so a trip to the Scilly isles would be nice! ( Swmbo would be horrified to hear)...

But thanks all for your kind comments.

M, will let you know his first trip goes!

Cheers all

Excellent boat, looks the business. Hope to see you in Scilly or Dartmouth sometime soon. My guess is that you'll be cruising at about 12-14kts, max about 17kts?

I had a Mk1 for a year or so then a new Mk11 in 1990 with a Perkins Sabre 225, its this boat that settled me in to Semi displacement boats.

16 knots cruise and 18 tops if I remember correctly..

The Mk1 with a wooden transom mounted rudder steered and manoeuvred very well the Mk 11 not so well, so I increased the degrees of rudder that one could use and then dropped the tickover down to 550 iirc. this helped a bit and in the end I had a bow thruster fitted.

Mine had the shorter wheelhouse and with three kids was a bit cramped for weekends away and I needed better accommodation.

A great boat it did exactly what it said on the tin.

Indeed Dartmouth is on our radar for the summer, so ljs & AB watch out..!

Cruise is a little bit more majestic that my Hardy, I think she seemed quite relaxed around 10 knots, but could cruise at little higher. On the sea trail she topped out around 16 knots / 2600rpm. Produces a lovely wake.. .will have to be a careful not to upset anyone. Quite looking forward to a slower pace where we can enjoy the journey more as well as the destination, and as for manoeuvring, this is made a lot easier due to bow and stern thrusters that are fitted, looking forward to a little more control I must admit, although I never had a mishap in my Hardy and often pottered around single-handed.

Congratulations on the acquisition, new boat threads are my favourite kind and I look forward to hearing how things go...
Will miss the Hardy Avatar but sure I will get used to a new one over time :)

Thanks Nigel, indeed should update but I think I will keep the Hardy avatar until Seabird sells, seems a little rude to change while she's still around!

Similar in many ways to my old CI32 which I had and enjoyed for almost 10 years. The best change I made was to move from a 3 to 4 blade prop, increased the top and cruising speed by about 2 kts, and at cruising speed gave better fuel efficiency, a win win change. I was pleasantly surprised.

Look forward to seeing you in Dartmouth, if we're around on the trots just off Darthaven marina do come over and have a drink with us. Boats name is Eos.

LJS, what a nice invite, hopefully take you up on that offer!

We do have a 4 blade prop, filled up with fuel yesterday when we returned to Hamble as I like to keep the tank full and worked out consumption and pleased with an averaged 13.75 LPH, 2.4 MPG, we cruise at 12 knots in all weathers.

I think you've done well for yourself. I remember swapping emails a couple of years ago and you mentioned a lack of enthusiasm for a twin setup in an equivalent sized boat. I used to get a consistent 0.9 mpg at similar-paced cruise when I had my Aquastar 33.

Hi Martin, Indeed I do like the AS33, separate cabin with bunks would be ideal... but double service costs would have been the last of my worries with 0.9mpg...

Was thinking some more about semi displacement boats and came back to re-read this.

13.75 ltrs is 3 gallons, which at 12 knots is 4mpg, no?

Ben, that was an average LPH so some of our running around would have been at 5 / 6 knots, however this is what I recently worked out for a range figure;

10.5knot cruise @ 2050rpm = 13LPH

10.5 / 13L = 0.81 nm/l
10.5 / 2.86g = 3.67nm / gallon

100gallon tank / 454 litres
20% reserve = 20g / 91L

so range = 363L x 0.81 = 294.03 nm

i.e. its an economical boat, but not that fast, sit back, put the autopilot on and drink tea.

(Previous owner said that he averaged 11lph at 10knot cruise, and they did take the boat round the UK so I think his figure would be pretty accurate so may even be better than the above)
