I would like to propose that the Island in the Deben at Waldringfield is given a name

After ma ny hours of careful consideration I would like to suggest Sporanominate

The name is a coming together of sporadic and innominate

Trinity House, the Admiralty and the committee at Waldringfield Sailing Club have all agreed that this is a jolly good name

I am confident that it will catch on and will soon be appearing on official course cards, maps and charts.

Def rolls of the tongue

The Island

Calling an island The Island reminds me of Saxon and Norman history.

When the Normans invaded and conquered they asked the Saxons what the name of a river was. And the Saxon thinking the Norman was a little on the thick side said it was "avon" with "avon" literally meaning river. So the Normans called it River Avon. Hmm!

Is it called that because some Scotsman is rumoured to have buried his wallet there. A bit like Treasure Island but with a couple of farthings rather than a chest of gold.

where do you live?

On the Island.

Oh good - that narrows it down somewhat.

Nope it deserves a name and if you people won't give it one then me and Trinity House are going to go ahead and give it one.

Nobody lives on "The Island".
have you contacted The Reverend John Waller ( Waldringfield ) his family have been running the Church there for many a year

Whats the preoccupation with calling everything by a name? Do we want to colonise it and raise a flag for the Empire over it?

I always like looking at the chart which says 'Beyond here be Dragons'.

Perhaps we ought to wait until something of note happens there, and name it for that. That's how most places got their name, something like Botany bay or similar.

now you come to mention in......

Sounds like some form of industrial paint stripper.
I'm not convinced.

neither am I

But the woman from Trinity House I spoke to on their switchboard was very polite - she told me that it was a wonderful idea and that as soon as I got off the phone she would tell her boss about it

She told me to leave it with her and she will get back to me -

"although sorting out these things can take years - decades even"

so I will let you know as soon as they come back to me

:) Perhaps you get someone to design a 'slug flag' and then you could mark the new territories you discover.

Slug-Island. :D

Nah!

Dylanland!

Or even Winter Island if you want to put people off going there! (As in Iceland and why they named Greenland even though it is nearly covered overall in ice!).

NewfoundIsland or better still OldExistingIsland!

PS Mind you Dylanland might attract people looking for a theme park!

(Help I seem to be addicted to exclamation marks!)

I think the Slug deserves more credit. After all the poor thing has to put up with Dylan's grumbles and dare I say (in jest of course), Heath-Robinson approach to maintenance. :D

Slugville..
Costa del Slug.
United States of Slug.
Cape-Slug.
The Slugdives.
United province of Slug and Snail.

None are likely to be technically accurate in any way but when did that ever stop folk? :)

I must say Dylan's Heath-Robinson approach to maintenance both amazes and amuses me! The engine control system of rope and pulleys is simply outstanding!

But if a system works and is reliable then it is a success. Just a good job boats don't have to have an MOT!

I am willing to learn

:)

If you would like to come to wells and show me how to fill the hole in the bottom of the boat and replace the bearing in the stern tube then I can film you doing it and I will know next time these vital jobs should be achieved

oh yes - and the roller reefing, new genoa, water pump for the gally (okay sink and single gas ring), wiring loom, plug for the tillerpilot and sadly the bog seat.

Its all very well for you people with your new(ish) boats to criticise but those of us who are seeking to preserve (patch up) a bit of yachting history.... and sail around Britain at the same time have a lot on our plates - oh yes that reminds me the crockery rack is falling off the bulkhead.
