Inspired by the article in Yachts and Yachting, I have been trying to spice a loop in some 10mm braided rope. After 2hours I've given up! Even using some "patent" prodders and long plastic hollow needles marketed by Roblon (left on the boat by the previous owner) I failed to get the inner core braid to return back inside the outer braid.

Anyone got any hints and tips, as I hate to be beaten by this.

Thanks Nick

tips i've been given:

only use new rope.
shiny rope is easier than mat.

from my experience:

tie a b*****y knot in it, i've never succeeded with a splice!

Been using a pusher or puller that incorporates a wire loop with which you can pull on the inner part. It's called magic wand and I bought it at West Marine, that's all I know since the thing and the manual are on my boat. It helps a great deal, still takes time and patience to 'milk' the outer braid over the final remaining loop. Usually a few drinks and a few blisters.

Thank for the kind words on the 'site' its been fun filling it up, it is hosted by Yachtsite who were offering these sites a while back on this forum.

Unfortunatly I think that they changed servers a week or so back and appear to have lost my gallery page which is a bit of a b*****er. I'm starting to wonder if Ill ever see it again! They are however very helpful so fingers crossed..

Marlow ropes do an instruction sheet for splicing loops in braided rope - my friends bought a new kicking strap rope at LBS and Marlow spliced it onto the block free!
Call them up and they'll probably send you one.
