You might also like to look at the Jimmy Green Marine web-site. They also sell the bits of kit you need. I found their instructions easy to follow.
Splicing is a very satisfying activity and is an easy way to lose a few hours!

Just had the job of doing it myself - couldn't be faffed buying a set of fids for £40 so butchered a cat toy which worked just as well.
Please note: I write this with all fingers, toes, external extremities crossed as we have just finished tying up the boat for the night

I found forn splicing a pair of circlip pliers are great. They have a rounded and tapered tip when closed which can be opened by squeezing the handles so opening up the gap you have made.

NB the circlip pliers are the ones which have an opposite action to ordinary pliers. ie jaws open when the handles squeezed. You can also get the opposite sense circlip pliers which work like ordinary pliers and so are nho good for this job. olewill

Circlip plyers??, nice. Never heard of that one before.

If you're learning to splice braids DON'T use an old bit, get a new piece which is of the floppier feel. You will find learning a sh*tload easier, then work up to the nasties.
