Due to a moment of incompetence I have ripped the spinnaker. Rather badly. The tear is all down one side at the edge tape and across full width at about one third up. Now, I do have friends who have a drape making business and so have sewing machines, the space and the generous spirit to sew it for me.
Their machines do not do the zig zag stitching which the all the current stitching is, just straight stitch although they can do 'overlocking' (not sure what this looks like).
two questions: will not having zigzag stitching mean the repair will be unsuitable? and any suggestions for suppliers of suitable tape to reinforce the repair
Thanks

Whilst I am sure your friends are willing andf able, albeit without the kit to do it correctly, I have had spinnkers repaired at the sailmakers for what seems like peanuts.
I tore my main last year, and they only charged me 30 quid to stitch it back together and put reinforcements on.

Spinnaker needs to be right shape, no creases, and must be worth about a grand?

I would take it to your local loft and get them to sort it.

For small holes you can use spinnaker repair tape .. Comes in a variety of colours .. For LARGE holes a good local Sailmaker will make a far better job ..

Light cloth is usually stitched with a 3-step machine. On each zig and zag it goes through three times.

If the cloth is porous (try blowing through it) it probably isn't worth repairing as it will only tear again. Suggest you take the sorry remains off to your sailmaker who will be able to advise.

Save your friend's favours for when SWMBO demands new curtains.

Well if it were me I would repair it with a domestic sewing machine and try to do it myself. Sail repair tape is very good being light and adhesive nylon. It can be sewn over as well for double sure. Just try to get the size/shape of the spin exactly as it was ie no hard spots as these will show and put extra strain on the repair. I don't think zig zag is that critical. Just keep the stitches long. Zig zag is used to minimise the chance of a tear line along a series of holes in the cloth
all in one line.

If it was a specific accident that ripped the spin that is fine but a spins life is defined by the point where it becomes brittle and tears easily. You know after a lot of repairs that he time has come.

good luck olewill

Cheers All
After full circles reply I phoned the loft I have used before in Southampton and got a rough quote of £200-£250! I am tempted to have a go myself as I suspect its getting a bit long in the tooth now anyway. I have photos of the previous owners flying it in the late 70s!
cheers
Dave
