The word can be either gipsy or gypsy so you would need to see the yacht herself to see which was chosen, but my guess is that it was the more common gypsy

Personally, anything with 'ism' in it is worth avoiding. What's wrong with pedantry? That, of course, is an anagram of 'randy pet'

Re: They spell it wrong

You mean "they spell it wrongly"

Wrong is an adjective as in "The wrong trousers"

You need the adverb as you are qualifying the verb spell, and that is wrongly.

Yes - because Chichester named it after his plane, the DH 60 better known as a Gipsy Moth - because it had a Halford's Gipsy engine in it.

But they all got it wrong because gypsies were so named because they were believed to have come from Egypt.

Split Infinitives

If you want to comment on split infinitives - then what about:

"To boldly go . . . . ." Gramitically incorrect, but the alternative correct version just does not have the same impact.

Urm .. must confess I did make it up .. so I reckon that entitles me to say how it should be spelt ;-)

New entry for dictionary

Pedant .. plonker who insists on needless adherence to rules
Pedanticism ... nature of type of plonker

em seems a bit tautological .. especially as its a bit too close to pederast for comfort

Kim,

Isn't it time that you installed a spell checker on this forum? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
