Spanner for 10mm Square drain plug

Hi All

Anyone know when I can get hold of a socket to fit a 10mm square Nut?

I have tried a std open-spanner but just cannot get enough purchase to open the fresh-water drain on my Volvo D1-20 and I am scared or buggering the nut.

If you have a set of 3/8" sq. drive sockets, you might be able to use one "wrong way round".
 
There will be a 12-point socket that will fit the 10mm square. I don't know what size so, unless someone else here does, you will have to borrow a socket set and try until you find one that fits snugly.

Or you could calculate it if you are good at trigonometry. :D
 
I have seen a set of socket spanners with 8 points for use with drain plugs having square heads. A farmer friend had a set that fitted a 1/2 inch square drive rachet wrench. He has sold up his farm and gone back to Channel isles, but he used them to work on tractors and farm machinery, perhaps they are tools available in those circles?
 
Don't use a double hex socket or a 3/8" backwards:eek: You will damage the bung. Find your local Snap On dealer and ask for a 10mm pipe plug socket. This will be your best and only way of doing this properly.
Incidentally, why is it that various people calling themselves engineers / mechanics / technicians have to do up sump bungs so bloomin' tight? :mad: Always having that problem in my workshop after some grunt has swung on a long bar on the poor sump bung. Hmmm rant over!:)

You're quite right, wheel nuts are another example, spun on by a 'air wrench' on max. I'm sure nobody was ever sued for over tightening, but a wheel coming off? It's a no brainer..

As a 17 yr old I collected my motorbike after repair and set off on a longish journey. Stopped for a producer 30 miles later, Plod said 'does that always drip?' pointing at my sump plug. Finger tight, it only had another 2/3 turns before it would have fallen out!

mmmm....I can remember the days when I did the wheel nuts up on my Morris Minor to circa. 32 lbs. When I bought a more modern car I was surprised to read the manual indicated those nuts required 70 lbs. The MMOC also recommeneded NOT allowing the local tyre dealers to do up wheel nuts with air powered torque tools because of possible damage to the wheels. Thats progress for you !

The PO (red) and GPO (yellow) Moggy vans had wheel nuts with conical sections on both ends to stop drivers putting them on backwards...

The people I use these days for tyres use proper torque wrenches and look up the list to set them, and the setting and application is checked by the manager before the job is signed off.

So far been unable to find a snap-on socket in the UK and so may well take you up on your offer Lenseman. Will PM
 
Alternatively get a brake adjuster spanner
