Just had this through from my marina in Empuriabrava, Costa Brava.
What if I moved to San Carles?

Dear Sirs,

We would like to inform you that the PORT AUTHORITY has introduced the T0 TAX for owners of pleasure or sports boats with a length of 9m or more in the case of motor boats, or 12m or more in the case of sailing boats. This is a maritime signalling tax.
In the attached document we send you the communication of the PORT AUTHORITY of BARCELONA, where the characteristics of this State Tax are explained.
The tax is collected, in advance, from the concessionaire on behalf of the Port Authority, to which it must then be paid.
The Port Authority has sent all ports the T0 tax invoices for the last 5 years.
The last 5 years are currently being invoiced to all boats that have had a home port in one of the State's marinas.
For this reason, we regret to inform you that you will soon receive payments for your boat for the last years.
The 2023 fee will be invoiced to you at the time of your annual rental renewal.
Below are the details, in order for you to calculate for yourself the amount you will be charged:
The tax, for boats having THE BASE PORT at our port, is calculated with the following formula:
MOTORBOATS ≥ 9 metres based in a Spanish port.
SAILING BOATS ≥ 12 metres based in a Spanish port.

0.57 € (basic amount) x 16 (coefficient) x m² (length x width) = amount to pay

Upon payment of the fee, EMPURIAPORT, S.L. will issue a certificate justifying this payment, for its eventual transfer to other ports in Spanish territory.

A BASE PORT is understood to be a port that is used for more than 182 days per year.

For "visitor" boats, at the moment of entry into any Spanish port, they must pay the amount corresponding to the T0 TAX, according to the number of days of stay foreseen, to be corrected at the moment of departure from the port, in case of discrepancy.

In the event that the TAX has been paid in another port in Spain, the customer will have to present the corresponding receipt for their home port, in order to avoid double payments.

FOR ANY QUESTIONS OR INFORMATION: empuriaport@empuriaport.com

We are at your disposal for any further information.

Yours sincerely,

Edf. Capitania s/n

Weird. You could fight it, perhaps on the grounds it is a liability of the marina not you (which I have not researched or checked), but the amounts seem to be tiny so it's probably easier to pay than argue and have all the hassle. B.O.A.T.

The above link is the first hit on Google for Spanish navigation tax

If it is the navigation tax ,then it's not new we've been paying it for years - were based in Majorca. I've just had this year's bill through from the marina.

If it is the navigation tax then I think you should have been paying it, so if you haven't it sounds like your marina has cocked up by not charging you it.

It must be one and the same. The €0.57 figure is the same so not a coincidence.
Do other folk on the Spanish mainland pay this I wonder?

For me it’s £1700 in back fees and £340 a year so not worth a fight and from @julians post they could have gone back further.
Still stings though
