Spanish cruising compared to Greece. (newbie)

hi there, this will be our first venture into ownership, but we have always preferred anchoring to marinas, you sound like a seasoned sailor, do you feel secure once anchored then going off into town maybe a bus journey away, i imagine its a confidence that gets built up over many years of cruising. i generally always have the what if it drags feeling when going ashore. There's no substitute for experience i realise that. just wondered your thoughts ?

Not sure if you are asking me but I am happy to answer. Experience tells me that once our Rocna is well dug in, particularly if I dive on it to check (in Greece), it is not going to move. In that case I am quite happy to go ashore for fairly extended periods. My son left his boat on anchor, admittedly a fairly large one, for more than three months unattended in a sheltered anchorage.

Reliability/believability of weather forecast must play a significant part!

Mike.

thank you for your reply, and yes i have read up a lot on Rocna anchors, they definitely seem the way to go to for peace of mind !

Rocna is certainly not the only option. There is not a great deal to choose between concave, new generation anchors. There are many threads arguing the merits of different makes but the performance of all of them exceeds the requirements of most users.

Do bear in mind that almost every good anchorage in the Balearics will be closed this season (and probably for several to come ) to protect the sea grass - looking at the charts in the NTM it seems almost every one will be closed to anchoring.

Buy it in Spain but then have the enormous fun of sailing it in stages across to Greece Croatia or Turkey.

+1

Crossing the Med is a fabulous experience, so many different places to see and some of the best cruising areas in the world. The Balearics are great. Ibiza has numerous little bays and coves that you can anchor in, all very stunning and a safe distance away from the clubs! Corsica and Sardinia are truly delightful. You could spend a season cruising around each and you wouldn't get board. Sicily and the must see Aeolian Islands - fantastic. Mainland Italy and Malta are also great options... And after all that you have the cherry on the cake with Greece (or Croatia or Turkey).

Really? The same was said last year and it was fine pretty much everywhere on Mallorca and Menorca. Well, I'll find out in a few weeks.
