I understand that the inhabitants of Northern Spain call themselves Basques.
( Sorry if the spelling is out !!)
It appears they do not take too kindly to us yotties from the UK flying a Spanish courtesy flag. They do , however , regard the Basque flag as their national flag.
Can someone tell me what the B...!! Basque flag looks like. I need to get one.
Who stocks them? The last chandlery gave me blank looks !!
Some say it is better not to fly any flag at all !! is this really true? Any one with any experience?
Personally I will need all the help I can get when/if I get that far so anything I can do to butter up the locals is important !!

I went through the same thing. I bought a Basque flag from a French chandlers half way down Biscay and flew this flag only, as a courtesy flag, when in Basque land! Didn't get any complaints or well done's so seems like this was acceptable!

It is quite true that some of the locals can be very upset by the Spanish flag being flown from the cross-trees - they certainly do not look upon it as a courtesy! However, flying the Basque Flag is not without its risks either - not everyone is a Basque Nationalist. Flying one flag or the other is taking sides in an argument that has nothing to do with us as visitors. When we cruised the coast in question we flew the Euro flag as a courtesy flag. Not legal, perhaps but it caused no offence and avoided any problems.

All I remember is that there is one with a crown in the flag, and one without.
We got it the wrong way around, somebody local WILL put you right!
Do your best and smile and admit you may have it wrong

Irrutzerria

Is red, white and green and easily obtained in France, especially S of Arcachon which is into the 2 French Basque provinces.

Yes the Basques take very unkindly to the Spanish ensign, and neighbouring asturias takes very unkindly to the Basque flag, as I discovered when I went to Colindres after Abra Getxo.

If you go to Donostia, be aware it's probably one of the worlds' greatest gastronomic capitals and rife with ETA activists. However, as a Brit you'll get a great welcome from the locals, though the Club real is expensive, snobbish and bad news.

PS The Spanish call Donostia San Sebastian, but don't refer to it as that whilst you're there.

Re: Irrutzerria

A problem you will have is when to take it down - the other inhabitants of Northern Spain are Galicians, and they don't like been taken for Basques.

Corunna is in Galicia

The purpose of flying a courtesy flag as well as your own national ensign is to mark the respective recognition of each country of its obligations under marintime treaties to which they are signatories.
In other words: "I am flying the red ensign because I accept the international laws of the sea adopted by the UK and I fly your flag in respect of your acceptance."
There is little point, therefore, in flying an ensign of a region which is not a treaty signatory.
Of course, if you simply want to say; "I fly your colours because have respect for your culture and customs" then fly their ensign by all means... but not above or in place of the national flag.
Or you could avoid the confusion by staying home!

The flag is not the Basque national one. You are entering Euskadi and it is in fact that flag which is Green, red and white cross and diagonal lines etc. As another person has mentioned you can get them in ports from Archachon southwards.

Re: Irrutzerria

You take it down immediately after leaving Bilbo and it's about 280 miles to La Coruna with Cantabria and Asturias to go through before you get to Galicia.

You'll find the local dialect in Asturias is very dissimilar to castilian (which most refer to as Spanish) and even has a different written form.

Re: Irrutzerria

plus they drink cider and consider the rest of Spain to have been 'reconquered'; Asturias was the only part of Spain not to fall to the Moors. A great place and great people. Galicia too.
