Southwold is an example of a fishing village that is far enough away from suburbia to have survived as a working community.
If you want to see what development & modernisation has done to a similar place visit Old Leigh.
I worked down the old town in the early 80's It was still a thriving working community with yachting & fishing side by side.
Greedy fishing interests have industrialised the old cockle shed area & much more has been converted to poncy restaurants, Its proximity to the Fenchurch street line & A13 means day trippers flock from all over Essex & turn the place into a seething drunken pit of chavs & pikeys.
A drugs & gang ridden war zone takes over in the evening. The place has become somewhere to avoid.
Be careful what you wish for.
