SouthWest \'n Brittany

My outline plan for a cruise in '05 is from Christchurch to the Scillies across to L'Aberwrac'h and then back along the North Brittany coast to meet other Christchurch boats at Binic on 14 July..After that it's got to be Sark, Alderney and back to Christchurch...
My query is:
Any suggestions on anchorages (NOT Marinas) along the way?

I draw 1.07m (3'6") with the plate up and can only take the ground if it's really soft like the dear old Christchurch mud!!
I've got up stream from Dittisham, The Yealm, and The Helford River pencilled in so far...
Any Local advice welcomed..
Cheers Bob E.

Dittisham is lovely- there is plenty of water at all times up to Greenway Quay- once past there, the pilotage notes in the West Country Guide are good for getting over Owers Flats- lots of people go around the outside along the line of boat moorings, but with your draught, you'll have a lot of the tide when you can get across. There is always at least 2m around the outside of the Galmpton Bend.

There are visitors moorings off Dittisham which can get rafted in summer. Two pubs in Dittisham- we love the smoked prawns in the Ferry Boat Inn on the shore. I've heard there are council showers across the playing fields. Totnes can be worth a visit on the flooding tide and you can spend the night on the TOwn Quay, Sharpam VIneyards are a couple of miles away by car- you pass them on the way up. SOme of the Dart River Line pleasure boats don't take any prisoners.

That's my local knowledge.

Alex

There is good anchoring on the far side of Owers Flats opposite the boathouses just above the swinging moorings. The tide runs at a couple of knots at times. It's a beautiful place to wake up. Bow Creek is a bit further up on the port side- muddy and dries, but go in at LW and just touch bottom.

Hi Bob, I'm only a mobo driver out of Falmouth but get to many places. Caution about Helford passage as upriver past the two pubs and swinging moorings as there are oyster beds and sign says can't drop yer hook. Around Falmouth Bay (inside Black Rock) are numerous places to anchor, off several small beaches. Also, on up through Carrick Roads taking the estuary/river course as if going to Truro, there are three Council operated pontoons which you can overnight on (£8 per night.....or free if you are away by about 7am) set amongst beautifil wooded hills. Plenty other places/beaches twixt Falmouth and Fowey to drop the hook as well. Coverack on the Lizard, just after Helford Passage, Portscatho....numerous places to overnight. Round here, if we se a few swinging moorings in a cove we anchor just off.

Brittany is great, just be careful of tidal calcs 'cause its rocky.
If you hit a good weather window loads of coves to anchor right along the coast. If its a bit iffy depending on the swell you can get right up and anchor in the following estuaries and islands,
Penze, Rade de Morlaix, Primel, Locquirec, round the islets off Trebeurden, Les Sept Iles, Port Blanc, Treguier just before the town, Lezardrieux just up river from bridge but keep out of the sand dredgers way, Chausey, Minkies and Echehou.
Some are good runs ashore in the dinghy others just quite and peaceful especially out of season and midweek. Last year apart from the seals we were the only ones at Echehou after a couple of locals left as the tide came in.
