After suffering severe shock at next years berthing quote from Swanwick am looking around. Town Quay is pretty reasonable - anyone based there who can comment on what it is like?

Thanks

I don't know what the current charges are but Deacons and Universals were usually much cheaper than Swanwick. Royal Thames have moorings at the top of the channel and there's always a chance of a "short let" for a season or two. I know someone who was on one of their moorings for over three years. You have to vacate if a member requires it for the coming season though. Mind you it's not a marina berth. Are there no likely options in Lymington? Joining one of the clubs and putting my name on the list would be my favourite option were I in your locale.

We used to charter out of there and parking was always a hassle. Not sure what the arrangements are for permanent berth holders but I would definitely check.

I remember the facilities being quite acceptable (though this is ten years or more ago which I suppose is time to go downhill if not maintained) and more recently I've heard good things about the staff in terms of checking on boats in bad weather etc.

Not a resident's opinion, but every little helps :)

I looked at a few when I moved from Swanwick.

Initially I moved to Mercury but then moved again to Ocean Village. I thought found the tides through Mercury really meant that it was too restricted. We could not get out safely on the ebb without fear of being swept down onto the downstream boats.

OV is a bit cheaper than Mercury, which was a pleasant surprise. The building work is ongoing and does mean more boat washing than I needed at Swanwick. I'm in the south side and it is very, very sheltered. There is plenty of parking around, albeit with a bit of a walk. Having a tesco onsite and a few restaurants is also nice. It's also nice not being so tidally restricted. In our small boat we could not out sail or out motor the Hamble on ebb. I can sail up Southampton water even against the fastest spring ebb, albeit a bit slowly. This means I can get a short morning or afternoon sail in almost anytime I want to.

As PRV says, parking is limited at Town Quay and with the new Gentlemens club and the ferries running till quite late, I doubt it will be quiet on a Saturday night. There is a coop a few minutes walk away and you are 5 minutes walk for loads of restaurants. I believe, but do not know for certain, that you have to radio in to VTS for permission to leave / arrive because of shipping movements. There is also going to be a lot of development round there, but I have not seen the plans yet - apparently they are on display in the civic centre or somwhere like.

I very much doubt it. The normal rule is that only vessels over 20m have to talk to VTS. I've never seen any mention of talking to them on the way in or out of Town Quay, including when we sailed from there, and I've never heard anyone doing it.

It would make sense to listen to ch12 to make yourself aware of what's going on; I do that anyway in Southampton Water.

I just checked. You are correct. :)

It appears Stuart was on a deal which came to an end, with a 35% hike! Swanwick prices are up 3% for annual berths.
In fairness to Swanwick I have to say they had made an error and sent me a quote without the deal which is because I am on the inside of a fore and aft mooring with another boat on the same pontoon so I have to warp in and out. the new quote without the error is only £60 up on last year. that said I can get into OV for only a little more and have my own pontoon

From where you lived have you thought about Hythe? Might be a bit more rural than OV and I would guess cheaper again - but that is only a guess.
