I'm going to be planning my trip from Shamrock Quay Marina to Ramsgate in the next week or so, bringing my new purchase home.
Having never ventured further down on that coast than Dover I would be very grateful for advice on hazards, best wind direction for a comfortable ride, state/time of tide on which best to leave and anything else you may feel will benefit. Got the relevent charts of course and have read up all info supplied in almanac etc, but you can't beat good old personal experience and local knowledge.

Looking forward to your input chaps and chapesses.

Don't you trust me? /forums/images/icons/mad.gif Right! DASSIT! I ain't a'coming now, I shall stay at home and read about you foundering on some tropical island where you will be raped daily by brown skinned beauties. Bound to happen if you take the advice of this bunch of loonies.

AAWWW, Sowwy Byron, Of course you're the best aligator, I meen navigator. PLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSE come with me. (need the ballast!)

I was just keeping all my options open, honest.

Looks like I'm the only bloody loony doing this trip judging by the amount of replies.
My usual crew have deserted me,(the surly gang you met) they think building contracts and earning money are more important than MY trip back, would you believe it??
The problem I am facing is being in Southampton when an apropriate weather window (no wind, flat calm sea) appears. I don't want to risk taking to sea in a boat I don't know, ie, its characteristics and handling, and as yet have little confidence in if there is a risk of it cutting up rough.
I'm planning to spend a couple of weeks on board hoping for a nice calm forcast, then zooming off in a homeward direction, hopefully with a couple of press ganged crew, or even some foxy chicks I may find walking the streets of Southampton, I've heard there are ladies that walk the streets in the night, isn't that kind of them, must make the place much safer for us visitors.
You just can't get the staff nowadaze.
Might even have to do it solo. Wot ja fink?

Hi Syd don't know what the new boat is so cant comment on average speeds. My logs from previous
journeys show Port- Brit 53nm Brit-Dover 62nm Dover- Rams 17nm

On the subject of speed/ hrs cruised, on the basis that S'Hampton is about 19nm from Ports therefore

S'Hampton-Brit would be about 72nm, Eastbourne is worth considering (24hr access) 23nm from Brighton

giving 95nm in a day. This may be enough. Then 56nm next day gets you to Ramsgate.

Suppose South Westerlies/West , certainly not SE or E, as it would be on yer nose. SW/W with an incomming

tide maybe.

Dover to Ramsgate can be lumpy but you arent going out in bad weather anyway certainly if Lord B is

with you.

S'pose I best come wiff ya if ya needs ballast. If nothing else I can pretend you and I are a'courting which will stop the usual bevy of Bottyboys trying to chat you up /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
Anyways, as Clive intimated I'm a gale force 1 moderating man and in those conditions and your 40 knot new boat we can make Ramsgate in about 4 hours maximum /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Don't mention your posterior to Syd., it annoys him, he seems to attract Bottyboys as I have seen for myself. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif BTW. His new boat is reputed to do 40 knots.
