It looks like the 'weather window' is opening tomorrow and Monday... so I will be bringing CLOUD9 up from Torquay to the River Itchen. Its going to be a chilly trip!
Not entirely sure if MDL will put me in Shamrock Quay or Saxon Wharf. When its time for lifting out it could even be Hamble Point.
The plan is to get all the winter chores done before heading over to Poole in February to get lifted onto the southbound ship. I thought it best to be as close to the departure point as possible and would have been in Cobbs Quay if they had had the capacity to lift us out!
The question is... this is not my area, so if there are any pointers to the local 'good guys' it would be appreciated. I only need the basics. i.e. Volvo engines and Onan generator serviced.
Anti-fouled
Anodes
And possibly an RYA training outfit to get me through ICC if I take the option of doing it in the UK prior to lifting out and shipping out to Mallorca.
Cheers
Rick

To add to the training pot, David at Five Star is excellent

Very much so.

For a boat yard, how about RK marine?

Hamble Point is good as lots of trade activity there, boat fixing types. Not sure if MDL allow other tradesmen in? Or perhaps they charge?

HYS at Port Hamble is an open yard, allow anyone in to work.

For engine servicing contact Nick Morris of Antarctic Marine. Based at Saxon Wharf, he covers Shamrock Quay and all the Itchen boatyards. Very experienced in Volvo engines (ex RK Marine) and all types of servicing. Very reasonable prices and comes very highly recommended. Can be contacted on 07950 435172.

The hoist at Shamrock Quay is going to be out of action during January and February for strengening of the hoist dock but the Saxon Wharf hoist will be available to cover during that time.

My £0.02 worth - Mendez Marine for the training; VolvoPaul of this parish for the servicing.
I am a very fussy barsteward and both companies surpassed my expectations so very happy to recommend.

No connection with either other than being happy customers.

Hi Rick,

There are plenty of all the people you will need for all service/repairs already in the marina or close by.

The attraction for me is that I can see these guys face to face and will always be meeting them working on other boats.

The engineers both Spanish and Brits are first class and I find the pricing very competitive compared with the UK.

If you are going to ship the boat in Feb 16 it might be the best time to arrange all servicing and anti fouling on arrival.

Remember only use Black anti foul and you will not get weed problems.

I would recommend Saxon Wharf/Shamrock Quay, the staff at both these are helpful and most services are not far away.
Also as the op is MDL berth holder I'm sure he would use an MDL yard as if using any others he would be paying twice.

Thanks for that, I am a bit picky too, but it works for us :-)

No brainer for lift out - use Saxon Wharf. We commission all our new builds there as they are the most obliging people in the area, nothing is a hassle for them. Also recommend Volvo Paul for engines out of warranty. If you want to try the Hamble, then Hamble Point is also good. As of today, we have an office there and the coffee machine is very good, just tell Craig that Mike sent you!
If you are heading South next year my bet is you will load onto a transport ship at Southampton anyway. Cobbs at Poole is a pleasant enough place (used to have an office there a few years ago) but you have to factor in the 2 bridges lift times and they can be fully booked for days in advance on their lift outs at this time of year.

Thanks Doug. I hadn't really considered waiting until we were in Mallorca. My theory being that its nice to have a fresh start when we get there and it will take me a while to get to 'know the ropes'.
Its good to know that costs are competitive though..

Black antifouling... do you have a favourite brand?.... or is the most important thing simply that it needs to be black? Thanks again..R

Thanks for that. I was expecting the shipping would be Southampton - Palma, but it is to be Poole - Alcudia. I was looking for the closest MDL option (as Ive already paid until end of March). Cobbs was a non starter as they can't lift the 26.5 tonnes.

I think if I were in your position I'd stay in Southampton to get all your servicing done then move to Cobb's to take advantage of your freedom berthing and if necessary move to the Poole Boat Haven on the Quay for a day or two if you needed to be closer to your transport ship. The bridges can be a bit of a pain but they do stick to schedule 99.9% of the time so planning the loading shouldn't be too much of a headache. We're based in Cobb's and don't live that far from you either it seems and I'd be willing to help out with stuff should you need a hand.
