.. needed for advice, (please)

not long now untill the big day, reckon about three weeks before my pride and joy - to be - will be handed over all gleaming n purring, ready for me to take her on her maiden voyage from port Hamble to the far east (east coast that is). Mixed emotions at the moment if truth be known !!
Anyway, down to the advice, reckon I'll be ok with the crossing of the Thames estuary bit - familiar waters an all that, but what I want to know is if there is anything in particualr that I should be aware of regarding the passage plan from the Solent to North Foreland. In particular, known areas to avoid, overfalls etc (especially as handover weekend coincides with the big March Spring)

TIA

Jim

Sorry to stray from the thread, but I note your choice of boat, and I'm very envious since after visiting the London Boat Show last month, and doing the usual... 'if I could afford to replace my current boat with a brand newy...'

I decided the BMB 29 was the one. Looked great and good build. It and the Sealine 28 were the only 2 newies that came close the matching the old Birchwood 27's volumous cabin space, but the BMB seems better value.

Oh well, I'll keep buying the Lotto.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

hi.

Going westwards should be easier, prevailing winds an' all that.

From port hamble, you need to nip along the solent eastwards, main issue is passing throught the Looe Channel. Try and do the trip with the tidal flow of course to win an extra couple of knots to Kent. It's a fair old trip, so a good place to rest the night is Ramsgate, imho. Otherwise if it goes a bit smelly, Brighton or er indeed Gosport. Or Hythe, I suppose. Good option would be to take someone along for a long trip, and has often proved worthwhile for salty or freshwater seadogs. I can vouch that many around here will
a) be useful
b) drink all your scotch

Ports to Brighton about 55 nm, as tcm says looe channel with tide behind you, dont know your cruising speed but Brighton may be a good place to stop, as the tide may soon turn, and you dont want it against you round Beachy Head. All depends on the wind strength of course, but WAT can be orrible round BH

Brighton to Dover 62nm Dover to Ramsgate 17 miles, well worth getting to Ramsgate much much nicer then Dover.

North Foreland can be very lumpy get the tide behind you if you can. Good luck

cruising speed will be 20+, depending on the conditions, so could conceivably make it to Ramsgate. The East of Beachy Head certainly looks the biggest area for concern on the chart, any particular tips for this stretch ie Route / Flood or Ebb would be gladly received. (don't mind steaming against the tide if the conditions are preferable) Will have to plan to avoid WAT on the day..

doing my best to hang on to that scotch !!

Think the biggest probelms arise in the channel because people have an inflexibkle timetable - if you're prepared to stop in case of probs, then that's ok. Eastbourne is first east of beachyhead, then on to dungeness, which can be taken close in. stay up to a mile off Dover and then inside the goodwins for ramsgate. Oh, I'll have to dig out the waypoints sometime...

This is a relatively long trip and you need reasonable weather. A good forecast would be a following NW or W or SW2-4 with an east going (up Channel) tide. You want to avoid any wind above F4 which is S or SE as these will give you a very lumpy ride. You also want to avoid any NE wind above F4 through the Dover Straits particularly in wind against tide conditions - the tide runs hard here. Try to be off Beachy Head and North Foreland at slack water to avoid any overfalls. The only slightly difficult pilotage is ensuring you find the Looe Channel off Selsey Bill, keeping off the Goodwins and crossing the Thames Estuary otherwise its just a case of keeping the lumpy bits on your left. Keep a sharp lookout for ferries to/from Folkestone/Ramsgate/Dover as these can appear very suddenly
I would say you should aim for Eastbourne as your first overnight stop with the option to go onto Ramsgate if the conditions are favourable or stop earlier at Brighton if the conditions are not favourable. Try to avoid Shoreham, Littlehampton, Newhaven and Dover as these places are dumps - all IMHO of course

Aim first stop Ramsgate, conditions permitting.
At all times 'ware fishing gear. Invariably laid in soundings so see chart.

Probably already know this, but watch the old anti submarine net obstructions, east of Portsmouth. Use the small boat channel through it.

If you're in Ramsgate at the weekend, let me know. I love Blue Nun!

On the Dover/Ramsgate argument, Dover is the pits, but there is a nice restaurant just by the Marina (name of which I can't quite remember at the moment), bit expensive but good fish and real ale.

Ramsgate Marina is much nicer (i know, I live there!) but the town itself is not exactly a world attraction.

If you like Pizza there's a good Pizza Express right next door to the marina.

Also Diesel at Ramsgate has just gone up to 32p a litre.

Have a good trip

Obviously not a Pizza expert then /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Nat-West Bank when they were there made better Pizzas. Best fish n chips are in the Continental, best Greek food up harbour street at Cavallinos, best Chinky up Harbour Street, best Indybum under the RTYC.

Oh yes, got the T48 now. Just spent a week in Majorca in the snow whilst you lot had my weather
I used to commute into London on 2 wheels. Luckily I moved my office out of town before I became a roadkill statistic. I now just bike for fun on a Beemer R1150RT
