Re: i don\'t like this

A good test of a trip is "would i feel a huge sigh of relief if we didn't go" and i evidently wdn't be alone if you chose to trailer. This is depsite the fact that i ws early to idea of driving it.

But it's petrols, it's march, it's a small boat, it's new to everyone, and you seem a bit *too* enthusiatic ("take it for a spin the day before") about your own abilities altho of course i may not be clear bout this - i mean er have you driven/skipered a boat before? You say you plan to take it for a spin so i imagine (hope) er yes?
If it starts, revs well when out of gear, drops in and out of gear um then that's as much as spin will tell you anyway.

You listed a load of gear of which the main things are missing namely liferaft and radar. And of course, you have yet to mention weather, the main issue: from some forecast it says SE others say SW but all say 15 knots+

Put his way, i am well-known to be up for boaty fun, and i don't much fancy it. It will be a bit hackity awful in a small boat, imho, and it remains tight on time: I am going down-channel in a bigger boat but with weather window of a month. You might need the same. If you do go, at least make sure the anchor is lashed down, and you have a liferaft and you choose you times so the wind and tide are in the same direction for a flat sea else you will get kicked about a lot.

Adey, the trip you propose is more than doable in the size boat you have. You have identified some of the concerns, after the previous thread, and how to mitigate them. 2 or 3 at the most hops should have you there given good weather (read sea state) windows. Apart from the inital hop from Brighton, and Lyme Bay, there are few bolt holes you can't reach that most day boaters don't have to cope with day in- day out.

The only major concern I'd have on accompanying you on any leg of this trip, is the one already brought up, and that is that you need to take the boat out for a few good trips before hand, preferably one in roughish conditions, so that anything that's going to go wrong will be identified and fixed before hand, and a decent spares kit and tools.

There will always be things that go wrong on the day, but there's nothing like a few good shakedown cruises to knock the bugs out of the systems, and ensure everthing is working well. You don't need to be halfway across Lyme Bay, having worked the engine for 4 hours continously for the first time to start hearing knocking noises or see the temp gauge start rising - these are issue for local trips first, not just a half hours cruising.

Other than that, I'd be happy to accompany you from anywhere from Portsmouth to Plymouth on the longer legs if you need someone experienced on board (and I think you do, for any of those legs, from what you've provided so far) and if I can fit into the schedules you have in mind. Weather dependency is total though.

And you can sort transport back <g>

Re: i don\'t like this

Well, I’ve heeded tcm’s advice and rebooked the road transport.
I do think it would have been okay though, I think short hops during April could have been fun.
Perhaps I’ll try bringing her up to the Mercury Meet in May.
Anyway, thanks to all who offered to help and if anyone’s ever in Plymouth PM me and I’ll make sure there’s beer in the fridge!
