I need to equip a new yacht with pretty much everything a new yacht needs, from dinghy, to flares, GPS to life jackets, etc. Can anyone recommend a good, large chandlery, preferably in the Portsmouth, Southampton area, to start shopping. Somewhere with lots of choice to see what's available would be ideal.

Thanks.

You're spoilt for choice down there, try port solent, for one, but there must be dozens! Cheap ones aswell, plus secondhand stuff.

Probably the best starting places are Aladdins Cave at Deacons boatyard at Bursledon (Hamble) and the Marine Superstore at Port Solent. Also recommend Seateach by the railway station in Emsworth.

Not to mention Shamrock Quay Chandlery in Southampton. If you're going slightly further afield, The one in the Hornet, Chichester is not a superstore but has a particularly good range of hardware in S/S, bronze and so on. There is also a similarly well stocked but slightly larger chandlery on the main road into Gosport, and a smaller one at Hardway, Gosport.

Suggest you get a list together and fax/mail it to several of these listed below. For a bulk order you should be able to get at least a 10% discount - get them to quote for you.

wow, just looking around the force4 site, the welsh dragon standard is £995.00, tis a little more expensive than I have seen around.

They must be valuable and in demand I guess.

Personly I think its a shame that he had to leave, after all said and done what did he really do wrong?
This is exactly the type of post that he did have expertise in!! or at least visiting chandlers.

Depending on your boat and your sense of safety at sea, I would seriously think about boowing the essential equipment and sailing to
a) France or Belgium to buy there - at non-island prices, expect rack rates below everthing you can negotiate in the UK
b) the channel islands to pick up the stuff that you have ordered from the internet and sent there

Either way, it'll save you a LOT

Second vote for Shamrock Quay chandlery in Southampton. I get all my stuff there - the prices are generally very good AND they have a boat owner's club where they record all your purchases against a reference number and then, depending on how much you spend, in November they send you a credit note of up to 12.5% of your total expenditure. It paid for all my anti-fouling this year!

They are also very helpful and will order in anything they haven't got. They don't do electronics.

Highly recommended. No connections other than as a satisfied customer.

i used seateach for most of my gear on a new build. they will match the best mail order prices (ask for the discount, they are flexible). quality of service is good and they don't quibble about taking back duff gear.
