Hi guys and girls. I was wondering if anyone had some information or experience in the SCS? I've sailed all around the world but never within these waters. I've always been cautious because I've heard stories about piracy within the Sea and restrictions on foreign flagged vessels having issues when checking into certain countries depending on your last port stop. I guess what I'm asking is specific information on the best seasons, piracy issues, port authorities and places to go? My plan would be to circumnavigate so essentially Japan, Phillipines, Borneo, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and then HK and stay clear of the Spratlies and Parcel Islands for obvious reasons. Look forward to hearing any responses. Thanks everyone.

I don't know whether demonboy (Jamie Furlong of Follow the Boat) will see this post. He's berthed in Sabah at the moment and had pre-covid plans to sail to Japan via the Philippines.

You can try and contact him through the FollowtheBoat Facebook page.

The CCP in Beijing are claiming sovereignty over the South China Sea so you might be used for target practice.

The Singapore Straits also experienced a rise in armed robbery attacks with 12 reported incidents in 2019, including 11 in the last quarter of 2019. The same region accounted for three incidents in 2018. Despite this rise, IMB considers the intensity of the attacks in the Singapore Straits to be “low level” and usually limited to armed robbery from the vessel.

Armed robbery attacks in Indonesian ports dropped from 36 incidents in 2018 to 25 in 2019. Elsewhere, in the Indian sub-continent, Bangladesh reported zero incidents for 2019, a first since 2015.

Somalia reported zero piracy incidents, yet the IMB PRC advises that vessels and crews remain cautious when travelling through the region.

Thanks for the response buddy. I''ve been keeping an eye on the piracy reports but on the plus side reporting seems to be on the decline. Whether that's c19 related is unclear.
