Source for Hardwood Mast Chocks

Does any one know a source of the internet where I could get mast chocks? I need a couple of extra ones.

Don't know about the internet, but as this is a "Practical" boat owner's forum, might I suggest some wood, a saw, and a plane.

I think NormanS is on the right lines, if the chocks aren't available from the boats' builders you'll have to make them or get them made.

I know a good timber merchant in Horsham West Sussex who has all sorts of woods I hadn't even heard of and I'm sure could make parts if given a pattern ( for a price ), but that's of limited use if you're in the Hebrides or a similar off-world location...

Meranti should be suitable for wooden chocks and is available at most timber merchants!

For mast chocks, I am not sure I would be visiting a timber merchant... Fiind a friendly wood worker and look in their bin for offcuts! Almost any hardwood is going to be fine. The last ones I made were in a mahogany substitute.

If you put your location in your profile, you might find a forumite local to you who can help out. I know someone who regularly commutes between the IOW and Sussex who could cut some iroko wedges, for example....

Either that, or next time you're passing a boot sale, look out for any old 50's-60's teak furniture or similar. Old chairs/ tables are best. Plenty of stuff around, broken/incomplete doesn't matter after all. I find this to be a good source of oak, ash and teak/mahogany.

Last big find I had was when passing a rural community centre. H&S had condemned several rickity old tables and chairs - all ex-military pre-war stuff. Piled-up on the roadside, takeway for free. Luckily I had my roofrack on ...

Where are you located, if your near Glasgow, I have some 300 year old Pitch Pine you can have, approx size 2"x4"x70"

Last year I gave most of my pitch pine to the boat yard at Rothsay Dock at Clydebank, they may have a bit left

wooden chopping blocks are often made of hardwood strips glued together. shame if it goes through the dishwasher, it delaminates and i get the bits. usually abourt 1" x 0.5" x 10"
