Sound Signals

eh shipmate - take a chill pill ...... we both posted our last at the same time, so if I had seen yours before I posted mine I wouldnt have responded so ahem <font color="red">forcefully</font>

nah - I enjoy my job and always have, its varied, challenging and interesting ....... IMO best way to earn a living by far, then I also have 6 months paid leave a year ..... so I would say I am not cranky, far from it -- what makes you think that anyway?
but had you told me that answer in an oral exam I would have sent you packing as being a deck officer (presumably) you cant afford to get safety issues wrong. in fact during my last ism audit a crew member got that precise question wrong and caused all sorts of nause .......
but if you actually read my post I explained how your retraction co-incided with my post, which in retrospect was unwarranted ...... but if you want to have a rant go ahead

and by the way, I dont look out the window for 8 hrs a day, I have been master for 24 yrs and often dont have the time to pass the time so luxuriously ....... dont forget to wear your shades

Well that's all and OK if you are on the abandonee .. but if I'm seeing you whizzing down on me ..

under rule 34 (d)
(d) When vessels in sight of one another are approaching each other and from any cause either vessel fails to understand the intentions or actions of the other, or is in doubt whether sufficient action is being taken by the other to avoid collision, the vessel in doubt shall immediately indicate such doubt by giving <font color="red"> at least </font>five short and rapid blasts on the whistle.

<font color="red"> ie at least 5 covers 7 </font>

rule 34(e) A vessel nearing a bend or an area of a channel or fairway where other vessels may be obscured by an intervening obstruction shall sound one prolonged blast.

So if in fact you're about to bale out .. I think I'd be entitled to give you at least 5 toots backs so you can clarify your intentions!!!!!!!!!!!!

it also says you shouldnt sound different signals such that they can be misunderstood - 7 short and one long isnt seven short folowed by one long making 7 short and one long ......

anyway whats an abandonee ffs ? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yup .. that why I'd give you at least 5 short blasts..

That the trouble with you navy types .. all you think about is yourselves ... no consideration for other vessels around you.

Abandonee is either Pink Floyd playing on a river near Aberdeen or a vessel about to be abondoned!

As a point of interest, I was on a short cruise in the med last week. Whilst anchored in a bay we decided to eat ashore.
Skip took the dinghy with two of the crew. Myself and remaining crew member watched them reach the shore. They then seemed to struggle, they took the engine off and moved the inflatable to a different spot. Then they appeared to be looking out to sea.
We had no means of communication with each other. We could have started engine, raised the anchor and motored closer, but probably would not have been close enough to shout.
We eventually realised that the engine had been swamped by waves not easily visible to us. They were trying to paddle out again.
This cannot be SO unusual. Any suggestions for the future?

Regards Briani

in the short time I have used this forum I have come to the conclusion that you are nothing but a trouble maker .... so as I cant be bothered to waste my time reading your essays, let alone replying to your silly comments, you have the honour of being the first to enter my ignore list /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

this is the ideal situation for a hand held radio, failing that brush up on a bit of semaphore ..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
or one can pass morse code using arm signals ......
or a torch ..... even in daylight
/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
were you anchored off for safety reasons - in which case it is doubtful you could close the shore anyway.

From the tone of your posts it would appear to be a priviledge to occupy such a position .. I consider myself honoured!

Thank you Jimi and Landaftaf
In think, in future I will take my pair of walkie talkies

We were anchored off due to depth limitations.
The final outcome was that a German couple in power boat was preparing to leave and I signalled to them to help as they were able to go into the shallows.
The faces of the dinghy occupants were a picture when the female removed her lower wrap exposing a 'G' string in order to pass a line. She declined the bottle I offered too!
