Always lots of questions about insurance and lifting out at this time of the year, so I thought I'd combine both.
I take the boat out at the end of October, because my insurers don't like her being in the water between 1st November and 31st March - the premium goes up a lot (like more than double) for year round use. In a sense, this hasn't bothered me up to now, because we're predominantly fair weather boaters - if such a phrase can be used in the UK - but as the kids get older and more confident in the boat, I quite like the idea of some winter outings, perhaps just taking her out for a couple of months for drying-out and maintenance.
Although I've never asked the insurers, I assume they take the stance that they do because:
(a) My boat is comparatively small (21ft 6ins) for winter boating, albeit rated Category B (though I'm not sure I'd like to put that to the test /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif);
(b) We keep her on a swinging mooring, but it's at the top of the Beaulieu River and very sheltered;
(c) Comparative lack of qualifications? (Dazed Kipper only, though years of experience and - famous last words - I have a clean claim sheet)
(d) Some other unknown factor X.
Does anybody else with a small sport cuddy have this issue? What kind of premium are you being charged for all year use? (I pay about 1% of boat value for 7 months' use and have been quoted about 2.5% for year round usage). Any insurers particularly good for cover of this kind?
Would be interested to hear.
