Well turn your assumptions around and then ask the same question.

You are 20 miles out (still in sight of land), the weather turns bad (it was OK when you left port and the forecasters got it wrong) and you don't have enough speed to outrun the weather.

Would you want to be in that boat if that happened?

You see plenty of this style of boat in Porthmadog - principally owned by local amateur fishermen. I think the current owner describes her in a fair way when he says that she will go offshore and estuary. I wouldn't go too far offshore though!

Suzuki motors are very good - especially where there is evidence that they have been looked after.

I would see if you can get her up on to a trailer to check the underside.

If all is well the price looks reasonable - but try £4k.

At 5k, the boats that will look after you are better are either RIBs or Fishing boat types. Neither have any accommodation so they wont do the job you are after.

Its a cheap boat that will give you time on the water, the hull is not the best when it gets bumpy (Deep V hulls are better) but watch the weather and dont stray too far from home, get safety kit/training and you should be OK. Remember both engines are mid eighties and reliability could be an issue. But from the photos, it looks well cared for and I think the price is fair (wave 4k under his nose).

I cant really suggest anything better in your price range that has that much accommodation. I agree with comments above 100hp on this is way over the top.

If you up your budget to 10k there is a lot more choice including Sealine 195 or 215, Fairline Weekends or a few sports cuddies.

Good choice for a starter boat and ideal for your specification.

Your limit will be determined by your nerve, conditions, experience, range, equipment and communications, but you will find that you will stick to being comfortably inshore once you are on board.

i have a dejon14 that i use for fishing and mostly go 2 miles off shore but i have crossed the Thames estuary from southend to sheerness which is about 8 miles and been fine. it is not great at anchor but likes planing where it feels comfortable.
the important thing about the boat you are liking is safety gear is a must and you really really need to believe in the engine.

couldnt you sell both engines and get a nice used warrented 70hp four stroke and a older 8-10hp aux. in my view i dont care too much about the cosmetics of the boat but the engine needs to be ultra reliable and capable of getting the boat on plane at around 3/4 throttle. mine planes well with 15hp so i use 25hp which is pretty fast in a very light boat.

Great, now I have had some good advice now, and I think as I have got the fact across that I will ALWAYS want to stay well within land sight, people see, to be giving me better feelings, and I feel much better about my choice.

Atlast I feel like I may actually get to own a boat and have a bot of fun.

Thanks for the help and advice

Mike

you get 99.9 percent of the fun within 2 miles of the land.
we obviously dont know your situation but have you set a max budget or hoping to get as cheap as possible.
with a small budget i got the boat first cheap cos it had no trailer and then bought a trailer that needed a new winch and post plus bearings so was very cheap and took 3hrs to make perfect and finally found the engine in excellent running order and used a 4hp as an aux.
i went a fair few times on my own to get used to how things work and handle and if anything goes wrong you dont frighten swmbo and the children. family days out can come when you've got a lot more confidence.

Yes I have a Max Budget at £6000 and thats why I am intrested in the boat I have posted, because it seems to offer me eveything I want. I am happy like you say top have some fun 2 miles off the cost and NEVER will want to go anywhere to far out that will put my family in danager, I first want to get the experience of hoe the boat handles. BUT I do want this boat to be able to handle a few miles of the cost, we will want to do a little fishing, and see the wildlife we have, some dolphin off cornwell would be great. So I think with time and effort this boat will work, It does not have a trailer, but I have plently of places to get used to it around Barry, and Cardiff first, then I'll get a trailer and travel a few places such as tenby etc.

I wouldn't want to be 2 miles ofshore in that in anything other than perfect conditions, frankly. Especially with family. 2 miles may as well be 20 in instances where it matters.

It's commendable that you want to go out and experience nature and the sea with the family, but (in an admittedly harsh comparison), it'd be like taking the family into the outback in a Morris Ital.

My advice to you Mike, is to buy the boat.
Use it in and around Cardiff Bay, join Cardiff Bay Yacht Club, see other post for link, and when the weather is perfect go out into the Channel for an hour or two in company with other boat(s).
As I've said previously, bet you'll be looking for a bigger one in a year or two /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
