Oh I know the stats but Chertsey is quite a high one for the casual swimmer ! And you cant see boats coming down.

Drives me nuts the amount of kids lost through swimming in the river.

Seen them jumping off Chertsey before and also in recent weeks off road bridges at Bray and Windsor. But how to stop them is the problem?

The only way to stop them is when they see their mates not surface....unfortualey seen this at Teddington before however it still does not stop them

Ahh yes Andy....its a good sign and long overdue there, the family of the chap lost there many years ago after taking a pee still insist he fell in whilst sober walking out of the nightclub...

I have had a couple of facebook chats with him about my disgust at the RNLI being used as the River Police on a number of occasions whilst responding to "shouts" in Kingston that really are police matters and nothing more. but thats a different subject and I could go on forever about that one!

Many years ago they used to jump off the bridges around Oxford, surface and swim to the boat, hanging off fenders etc.The hire boats were always targeted because they would slow down or flap. Was in the lock with a lady who'd had her handbag nicked by some scroat who'd managed to board them at the stern, steering at the front.
My father used to get his very large dog to peer over the side at them, they soon let go,another very well to do couple used to keep a kettle of boiling water on the go to pour over any fingers that appeared on the toe rail!!

Couple of nippers jumping off Tedd lock cut bridge tonight. Can't tell you how many times I have seen this over the years inc one that never came up.

Politely told the lad not to do it as he may not come back up and he told me he would see me next Tuesday ... Charming but not un common from the Ham lot.

An invitation to tea? How civilised :D

I've seen that loads of times, it send shivers up my spine. Some need educating, others could do with a Darwin Award.

I've never swum in a fast current. I would assume that i'd swim towards the bank, and then drift with the current, and make a kind of diagonal line to the bank.

Can you not swim sideways to the current or something?

Why do people die?

Difficult to swim when a shopping trolley has you by the nuts or you have impaled yourself on a log or you simply can't swim (don't laugh a the last one..)

The problem is a complex one. Young males have hormones affecting them, they drink and take drugs, they have their peer group to impress and they believe they are invincible, all in all a very dangerous cocktail.

i had a period of about 8 years when every christmas eve me and a friend would jump off a bridge into the thames----we did eel pie island----teddington lock and mainly kingston bridge---my last time was the night before my wedding-------did lots of silly things when i was young------regards from an older wiser and more boring lenten
