I have been offered a Holman & Pye designed HUSTLER 30 - XM (deeper lead keel) version for £19,000 and want to know if this is a fair price. The boat is well known to me and I have sailed her safely in extreme conditions. She is in very good condition, has been meticulously maintained and is well equiped, though could do with some up-dating - roller furling genoa, windlass &c. An acurate inventory appears below. Does anyone have any thoughts on the price and/or a sensible offer?

Hello Clive,

Welcome to the forum, I do not know the type of boat in question, however there appears to be a very good inventory all be it a little dated in places. My advice to anyone buying a boat is to have a survey done, especialy a hull survey as you have not mentioned anything about the condition of it. OK a survey costs money but far less than the amount you will be paying for the boat and will in cases be needed anyway for insurance. The surveyor should indicate what a fair price would be for the boat and it's insurance value.

Jim.

Hallo Jim and thanks for your welcome and reply.

The boat is to be surveyed next week. From the outside, the hull is in good condition, with a minimum of holes for exhaust, the usual offices &c. and has been properly washed, scrubbed and antifouled out of the water every season for thirty years. Obviously, I'm concerned about the keel bolts but at least she's got a lead keel and not an iron one.

If anyone knows anything about the class, then I'd be very grateful to hear from them.

Cheers - Clive

I owned a Hustler 30 for 7 years and sailed her with my (then) young family. We really enjoyed sailing her and she proved to be an excellent first boat.

As you will know, she is an old design now and nothing like as roomy as a modern 30 footer but, as compensation, she looks and behaves like a 'real' boat. She can be quite wet at times as her freeboard is low but a good sprayhood prevents most of the water reaching you.

The only mishap we had with her was a sheared chain plate (they are U bolts) but the mast stood up and the chain plate was soon replaced.

A good surveyor will tell you if she sound. If she is, the inventory looks good and she should make you a good boat. As to value, I tend to ask the question 'what's she worth to me?' If she is worth £19k to you, then that is what she is worth!

http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/boats/g3104/g3104.htm Theres one there. However you have to look at several to get a good idea of value for money. Then you can make an offer on a take it or leave it basis. You'll get the yacht but there again you might even get it even cheaper. Depends whether you have a well motivated seller when it comes to making your move.

There is another of these boats in Suffolk Yacht Harbour at Leavington Nr Ipswitch going for £14950.00 See http://www.starline.demon.co.uk/www - Boat (Corinth Mistral).htm Don't forget you always make an offer.

My thanks to Messrs. nordic_ranger, MedMan, pc_eye & cagey; all interesting and useful stuff. I'm in the process of having a survey done prior to making an offer and will keep you posted.

Any further advice or opinions of the class and boat will be gratefully received.

Hallo "cagey"!

Thanks for your message re: Hustler 30. Please send me details of your vessel to: clive@rigden.net

The vessel I'm looking at is the XM deeper lead keel version and having only four berths she does have the advantage of masses of storage space, (relatively speaking), especially in the cockpit.

Yours 'aye,
Clive
