Soltron or Fuel Doctor?

In an earlier thread I have received helpful advice on extracting water from my diesel tank. On googling Soltron I came across Fuel Doctor which looks useful from the advrtising blurb. Can anyone advise on which is the better for extracting the residue of water and combatting diesel bug?

Why go for a repackaged consumer product? Grotamar 82 is what you need, it's what oil refineries use.
 
If you have water in the tank then surely you should be looking at ways of removing it. Diesel bug lives in the divide between water and oil so if you have no water you will not have the bug. You can get products that help the water combine with the diesel so it just goes through the system. If you think you have large quantities of water in the tank then it would be better to drain it and remove the collected water. You may find you have a tap on the bottom of the tank for this. Failing that you may be able to get a hose to the bottom. If you don't have diesel bug whats the point in treating it.

Moisture builds up on the inside of tanks during the winter so best practice is to fill the tank. Watch where you buy it from or consider using road diesel.

Grotamar 82 web page says clean out the tank otherwise you get blocked fuel filters after using the product. If the oil companies use it why do we have to use it as well ;)

Thanks everyone. Belt and braces. I will be attempting to get the water out from the bottom of the tank but given the problems involved (see my other thread) I can't be sure of removing all the water.
 
Grotramar and Marine 16 use the same additive.

I have used Marine 16 abroad when I knew the diesel supply was contaminated with total success, and other boats were regularly having problems.

In PBO tests, Grotamar and Marine 16 products are about the cheapest per litre treated.

Can you not drain the water out of your tank? And/or fit a water separater in addition to your fuel filters?
 
You are talking about two different types of product, Grotamar etc are biocides (strong poisons) used to kill the microbes in a polluted tank, Soltron, or Startron is an enzyme treatment to assist in the 'digestion' of small quantities of water or pollutants.
My advice in you concurrent thread still stands, on the presumption that the tank was clean before you left the cap off, get as much water as you can out of the bottom then treat at least the next couple of tankfuls with Soltron. There is no need to add a biocide if you do not yet have the bug.

Get hold of a copy of MB & Yachting April 2011 edition - explains what each additive does and how successfully
