Solid GRP and encapsulated lead ballast

Why the question mark after the Nicholsons? If it's doubts regarding the ballast I can assure you the Nic 26 has encapsulated lead ballast.

Neither solid decks nor encapsulated ballast are without their problems.

I wouldn't be surprised if later examples of some of these boats have cored decks.

Exactly. I can't see solid GRP decks as being a particularly appealing feature. Properly cored decks are lighter and stronger.

Thats the problem: So one has to check every single boat for that. Lead or iron can be detected with a magnet and / or compass (Reference: Paul Stevens - Surveying Yachts and Small Craft p. 40). Sandwich construction usually can be seen inside when there is a step between thicker and thinner parts of hull or deck and also ... (Reference: Paul Stevens - Surveying Yachts and Small Craft p. 34-36).

That Rival 34 keeps hanging in there.

PS,

I would bet my Grandmother that the Nic 35 has some form of composite deck fwd, I have grave doubts about the 32 as well. It's the wide flat areas that struggle a bit, as a single skin.

If we are casting a wider net the Excalibur 36 has a lead keel; the deck we know not of.

Still left out Island Packets.

IIRC, the 27, 29, 32 and 320 are what you require-fully encapsulated lead keels, shallow draught as well. The coachroofs are insulated with IP's patent " Polycore " closed cell composite foam which is to the best of my knowlege trouble free. Solid GRP decks.

Check them out-you never know, might be the answer to a maidens prayer............................

I think you will find that the superstructure IS solid GRP, the patent " Polycore " closed cell foam is between the internal liner and coachroof is an insulator against the tropical sun. Remove the liner and foam, the coachroof well substantial enough-better than many less well built yachts.

Patent "Full Foil" keel, encapsulated lead ballast.

What's not to like, if those are on your shopping list............................

Sounds like a transitional case ;-), the OP may want to send it to the court of arbitration...

"A unique feature of all Island Packet boats is their method of deck construction with "Polycore," a mixture of resin fillers, rather than the more common balsa or foam core. While I have occasionally noted minor separation of the fiberglass laminate from the core on older models, I have yet to run across any serious delaminations or failures, but this is something to keep an eye on.

According to Yachtsnet the Co 26 was iron ballast in the UK boat; which is what I had always thought.
The Canadian boat was said to be iron until 1983 when they switched to lead. See here:
