I am planning to take my camera on a tour of Solent area boat yards

I am after the sort of places where oldish blokes (Thinsulate hats and blue overalls) who own oldish boats wander around dabbing unguents on moldering hulls and mithering knowledgeably about cutlass glands.

ickety ladders, cobwebs glistening in the sunlight, gravel stained a myriad of colours from years of scraped off anti-foul .

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a few so that on one of these sharp bright winter days we usually expect in January I can drive South and take a few snaps

- and also keep my eyes open for old Centaurs (sorry Chinita)

Beware, Here be Dragons, and OGA Members

See you in Thornham Marina then Dylan, shame Dolphin Quay closed down, but there's always Birdham Pool, or all the yards on Hayling Island.
But be aware the Westerly Owners Assn Covert Action Unit will probably kidnap you and subject you to a compulsory RYA diesel course:D

Also you will be entering Seajets lair;)

One was advertised in the Cornishman last week, for £1000, so they are out there.

I rang up, sold PDQ

Keyhaven might fit.
Rochesters? In Christchurch.

The one up near Wareham Red something? Actually might have as much around Poole Harbour.

they are around....

one went for £800, another for £1750

there is one in North Wales I have been told about

and another good one (Bambi) - no engine at all so I will not even have an old Volvo to dismantle and sell one bit at a time

- but they are still asking too much for me even to go and look at it

it is a solent boat I am after

but I really do want to do a little photographic study

Where to start...

On the Hamble is round the back of Mercury, Salterns, Elephant, Deacons, Cabin, Chandlery Barge, on the Itchen..well..its never ending, and a across at Hythe too.

any specific recomendations for the Itchen and Hythe

D

There's a yard at Hythe where Medusa was rebuilt, I think the old pilot boat Leader is there now, maybe being rebuilt, maybe not, I'm not terribly au fait with Hythe, its across the water, google maps may help.

On the Itchen a drive along Hazel Road, Woolston, from the Yacht Tavern with take you past at 2, can;t remember the name of the first, second is Lauren Marine. Kemps in Quayside Road and the yard next door where at least one Centaur is liveabord, chap called Ian, further along is Dyers by Cobden Bridge.

great stuff

thank you very much

I am getting a new/old stills camera for Christmas so I want to have a play with it..... and look for a boat at the same time

As Tidewaiter says the yards on Hayling are worth a look; Hayling Yacht Co, Wilsons - there were others but I think they've gone.

There is a yard / pool at Gosport where liveaboards hang out, looked an interesting place - maybe someone can remember the name.

Thornham & Andrews marinas / yards at Southbourne.

If you can fund the fare and time I'd think a look up the Medina would be worthwhile.

I can say there are no defunct Centaurs at my club !
