Solent Boat Yards - with lots of old boats

any specific recomendations for the Itchen

Kemp's, Quayside, Dryer's, Ocean Quay, Itchen Marine Towage (maybe), Smith's Quay, Merlin Quay, Lauren Marine.

Basically, cruise along the river with Google satellite view (and street view to look at name signs) and look for the white lozenges.

One was advertised in the Cornishman last week, for £1000, so they are out there.

I rang up, sold PDQ

I know Sally Forth is for sale at Chichester - she is a project though. If you ring the Marina office, they will pass your details to the owner. Would be lovely to see her in use again, especially with that name!

I know you are man of the world who will exercise good manners and respect, but for the avoidance of doubt and the benefit of others, please bear in mind that boatyards are private property. As such, it is important to request permission to take photographs and reasonable to expect that it may not be granted.

Elephant? Plenty of old boats there.

Over the water, what about Lallows?

Or there is Nick gates:

Or what about Bucklers Hard? There are plenty of photogenic boats there.

If you want a decent blue overall so that you have natural cover, try Dickies:

Only problem LARGE isn't - well not quite large enough.

It fits in the summer with very little underneath(!) but in the winter its way to small to fit when wearing a decent layer of jumpers / thermals, etc.

A few years ago rummaging thru small boatyards I came across a whole "muckle" of small tatty boats at Dell QUAY.....Handy PuB but wouldprobably refuse entry to oldish men with funny hats.

I am planning to take my camera on a tour of Solent area boat yards

I am after the sort of places where oldish blokes (Thinsulate hats and blue overalls) who own oldish boats wander around dabbing unguents on moldering hulls and mithering knowledgeably about cutlass glands.

ickety ladders, cobwebs glistening in the sunlight, gravel stained a myriad of colours from years of scraped off anti-foul .

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a few so that on one of these sharp bright winter days we usually expect in January I can drive South and take a few snaps

- and also keep my eyes open for old Centaurs (sorry Chinita)

This the sort of place:

that is just the ticket

what an absolute treat of a place

and with a minstrel in there as well

you know when a bloke gets to a certain age there are few things that can offer more pleasure ashore than a boat yard tour

you can learn to read a boat yard and know if you will like the denizens of the place

there are people who say they would hate to see me liberating an old Centaur from just such a place
