I'm about to use a swinging mooring for 6 months. Currently have 2 x 70 amp/hr batteries fitted to my Sealine 24. Is it worth purchasing a solar panel to keep the batteries topped up between trips?

If so, what charge rate would I need?

Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't really be necessary unless you plan to use lots of power and not top up the batteries from the engine. My boat is never hooked up to shore power and hasn't caused me any problems.

The one thing I do keep on board is a small portable genny, comes in useful for power tools and when running I do sometimes connect the battery charger.

Agree with John. As long as your batteries are in good condition you should have no problem. Even in a marina most people don't use shore power when not aboard. If you do have problems, the batteries needed replacing anyway. Try and get a night in a marina now and again for a good fresh water washdown and polish. I had a boat on a swinging mooring for a couple of seasons and the deterioration was quite noticable because I could not wash it down properly.
