Just purchased new solar panel to go with existing panel but noticed the diode is wired across the positive and negative terminal and not in series,how would this prevent backflow at night?

It is bypass diode not a blocking diode.
Very few panels have blocking diodes. With most solar regulators they are totally unessary and even with direct connection a blocking diode will generally cost more than it saves.
If you have any doubt measure the drain from the solar panel at night.

Fitted new panel today amazed how little light it needs to charge compared to original semi flexible.
