Solar Deck Fan

Fitted an identical one a year ago. Depths of winter on a dull day it doesn't run much or charge. This time of year it's running 24/7. Just as robust as the regular ones.

I would be looking to fit one of those computer type fans that run on 12v to the existing vent and connect to the ships supply via a switch. If you want to run it 24/7 then spend the cash on a solar PV panel to charge the battery. olewill

I'm looking to replace an existing ESC solar deck vent / fan with this item that I've seen on fleabay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330807489453?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Has anyone got one and if so how good / robust is it? Is it strong enough like the ESC one?

Adequate but not great - but do make a difference and useful addition to the heads.

Do not last that long, have to un-install to replace batteries so may as well replace the whole unit as the motor 'goes off' and the solar panel gets to look a bit sad.

Did install computer fan to move air around the fridge - but do not think they are any good for the heads.

I like how it just works without switches or maintenance. The outside is the same profile as a standard vent so no leaks and no heavy weather issues. We also fitted one to our last boat and never had to change the battery or do any maintenance. Just a simple way of giving power-free forced venting to the heads.

Many thanks for the info. Are they strong enough to stand on?

Gwylan, you said it didn't last long, how long?

I've thought about wiriing into the boats 12v system but not sure if a trickle solar charger would keep a 250ah bank charged if we were away for a month. Still food for thought.

EC Smith tannoy vents are able to take people standing on them; just make sure to get the model which can be shut off in heavy weather, it's simply a case of sliding up a blocking collar sleeve.

I'm just curious as to why you don't want the direct replacement from ECS? They are ten squid cheaper... http://www.ecs-marine-equipment.co.uk/marine-equipment/ventiduct-systems-ventair-item-4204.html

Rob.

Cardo is right, the unit you are looking at is the static housing / vent. The ECS solar fan unit is ~£90 on it's own. It was the first one that I had many years ago but corroded away and failed after about 5 years and £90 for a wee solar fan is a rip off! The current one I'm replacing is a bodge up from a £10 plastic solar powered fan that I got off ebay, but it does not have the night time facility and is a wee bit noisy.
