Sodium ion batteries

Potential buyer to sales agent :

Buyer > What's the range under power for this yacht ?

Agent > Arr Sir ... very good .... about 100nm and then of course you can recharge from solar ... on a good day - about xx hours to recharge .. so infinite range !!

Buyer > Hang on - you said about 100nm on a full battery charge ... so range is 100nm ?? Then I drift about waiting for batterys to recharge ?? What about when there's no sun ?

Agent now looks at shoes .. shuffling ...
Buyer: what’s the range?
Agent: 1000NM at 1200rpm
Buyer: what about at 2000rpm?
Agent: less. Way less. With a clean bottom.
Buyer: clean bottom?
Agent: yes range is absolutely not something we can define with a finite fuel vehicle in a viscous liquid unfortunately so you’ll need to either stay close to fuel docks or use renewables.
Buyer: renewables?
Agent: imagine having a fuel dock on deck and the sun refills the tank slowly but reliably.
Buyer: fusion power? Sweet.

I agree but range is range it's quite simple it's what you can achieve with a full tank or battery
The Greenline 33 ft hybrid motorboat has a top speed of upto about 8 knts on the single diesel....about 4 to 6 knots for about 20 miles on battery....and unlimited range at about 2 or more knots as long as the sun shines.
This mixed choice gives you many options....more if it was a yacht with sails. Also the solar array and battery bank means you can run household appliances without a generator...which increases your range.
So....range is like a piece of string....it all depends on which mix you choose and how fast you want to go

Oh remind me again how fast a diesel goes when the tank is empty? Reread my post. Electric with solar has infinite range.
I read your post. If you are in a position to need to move quickly to meet a tidal gate infinite range does get you there in time. When the sun goes in and you have no charging you have zero range with a flat battery.
My friend in his Contessa 32 often limits himself to 2 knts because he only has 28kw of power. I have half that for domestic loads. I am not trying to drive my boat around. Infinite range with big gaps of zero range whilst you wait for some sunshine isn't infinite range. Night time with a flat battery, you hwve zero range.

Whilst electric boats with solar panels a decent battery bank, in a sunny part of the world and a crew with all the time in the world has infinite range, it’s a very niche market. Technically infinite range. Practically there’s a point where infinity gets boring
