I regret to say that I fail miserably on this score. So whoever has achieved the highest discount would perhaps negotiate on my behalf in future.

Fear not.

Sometimes the asking price is fair, sometimes not.

Sometimes, just sometimes, the largest discount is not the best deal.

About 11% discount on my boat but it was priced pretty fairly by the broker I feel. This was last July 2012. They sold a similar boat this year for the same as I paid for mine so I can't have been too far off what others might have been prepared to pay for it.

I've seen same model/year boats being advertised from £34,950 to £49,950 on the net over the last month. It's a confusing situation for someone new to boats.

30% but not because I was being cheeky but because I had to replace the engine and I think the seller knew he was aiming a little high for a boat with a broken engine.. I looked at similar in working condition and took off the price of the engine.. I actually underestimated the work required to get her sorted out a little so probably should have taken off a little more but both parties were happy with the deal so good feelings all around and we have had a great season on her..

I think 10% is a good goal to aim for. Excuse me for asking but is that your Monty 250 on brokerage at PBM ?

No worries, yes, that's my Monterey for sale. Apologies for the awful photo on the web site of me grinning like an axe maniac - I never thought they would use that one let alone put it on the front.

Whether it sells or not is another matter. If someone makes me the right offer I'll take it but I think its unlikely because it's the wrong time of year. Come March next year it should sell quite quickly being a diesel but in March I'll more than likely renew my mooring and enjoy it for another year.

If it sells I'm not sure what to do with the money anyway? Buy another boat? Don't really want to go smaller and bigger seems to come with the "penalty" of twin engines and the associated expense. 25-28' seems to be about the right size, for me at least without going the Fairline Targa route (dream boat, but big jump up in money!).

Maybe I'm best keeping it - it's been 100% reliable since I bought it, but then I've probably put the kiss of death on that now!!!

Does it matter? As long as you are happy with your purchase price, why is the discount level important?

I take your point - just wanted to see what others were doing/ achieving. No 35% ers yet. Maybe that one has been exhausted. Looks like I wil have to ask OGaryO to negotiate my next purchase.

[ Slight thread drift (but it is my thread), I recently moved house and the estate agent who sold my house also negotiated the purchase of my new house. He got it for me at a price £20k below what I would have paid. No charge. So I have got an extra £20k to spend on my next boat :).]

Strange thread beejay, be carefull look where it got me this week , see the % police are lurking on here and there sending out fixed penalty tickets( well trying to rubbish me at least) gone quiet now though.

I am in the band you are struggling to find......

Boats are always and only worth what someone is prepared to pay.The good thing at the moment is that the credit crunch has removed virtually all of the buyers who were able to enter the market with bucket loads of finance and drive the second hand market to unsustainable levels.
If you are thinking of buying a boat now is probably the time to do so.Despite some comments there will always be some bargain boats out here if you search hard enough, but it always involves footwork and patience, not just wandering in to your nearest broker with your wallet open.
Probably some good fixed rate finance deals around as well.
This present financial rain check is only temporary and with the way the house market is already stirring its loins,we will be starting down the road to the next bout of financial insanity very soon.
Government support for buying a 600K house anyone.;(

No 35% ers yet...

Either 35% or 50% depending on what advert you use... Was on the market for 3 years and osmosis found on survey though.
The other boat I was interested in at 95k (originally 120k) was offered to me at 58k after viewing.
I think the seller and I both got a fair price. Can't see anyone paying me much more for it.

Current 22 Year old British built sports boat for sale in Spain. Had a lot of money thrown at it by previous owner (approx. €22k) so was asking €25k. Unfortunately the best boats in that class ask €12-18k. Watched it for a while and then started talking about a low offer at €12k. Seller not interested so it sat there. 2 Months later seller needing to get rid of it. Broker told me a deal could be done so jumped in car. Was quite shocked what I found in that the hull was in a poor condition with a lot of wear and tear and had not been loved. New engine, outdrive, trim tabs cockpit furnishing and electronics (all the expensive quality stuff) but not sure if hull could be saved. Had a discussion to take price lower than €12k but gave no actual figure. In the end we agreed a price based on scrap i.e. engine and good bits....€8400. A huge discount from an unrealistic asking price of 66% but you have to remember it was a half done project so that was all it was worth to me as I knew I would have a lot of work to save her.

Been worthwhile so far though. Had a great Summer on her, done lots of jobs and now she is sat in the yard having more work done. A perfect boat for me at this time. I will spend more in total than I could resell her by a few £thousand but a boat is for fun! No finance, low running costs and steady improvement. In reality she should have been up for €12995 so in my head my real saving was 35%.

Right everybody selling a boat......

With all these people about saying get 10,20,30% off the asking price.

Put 20% on a fair price and get what you want for your boat... I have Little Ship up for sale and have had some offers, non of which were fair they were just chancres. One said that's all he could go too. He was told to go and keep saving.

A boat isn't only worth what somebody will pay for it, it may be worth keeping as I have. Some need to sell, some want to sell, some sell to move up. There are many people out there who want to find the best boat for what they can afford and will make ridicules offers.

A fair price is all that should be advertised and offered.

Tom.

So .. if I have a budget of £80k does that mean I might be looking at boats advertised in the region of £100 to £115k range and offering £80k ?
Or perhaps I should save myself some expense and look at boats advertised for £90k to £100k and offer £70K ?

I find it srprising that people are prepared to accept any more than about 5% off the asking price for a boat in well presented condition. Perhaps it is a matter of making numerous offers until a desperate seller is found?

Not necessarily a desperate seller, just a willing and realistic one.
It's surprising how many boats are advertised for sale whose owners don't really want to let them go.
The 'discount' isn't really important, just the sale price.
