I bought a new boat in 2003. Had some money from the sale of a business and decided to buy a new boat and a toy car.

I still have the boat, 22 years later, and it's now worth about 2/3 of what I paid new, so ignoring what I've spent on maintenance/repair/replacements, and "opportunity cost" of having the cash tied-up in a boat, depreciation in absolute terms has been a bit less that £3k/yr. Not too bad for a 50fter, especially considering that people pay £10k/yr+ just for a mooring.

Anyway, my old boss, possibly the best boss I ever had, used to say “if you die in debt you’ve made a profit” which made sense to me.

Seems reasonable to me, the kids didn’t earn the money and this is one of the few mechanisms to rectify wealth inequality. Unfortunately wealthy people don’t pay IHT because above a certain you “don’t have anything to leave to your kids”. The country would be in a far better position if poor people could understand that statement but it’s so far outside their understanding it’ll never be addressed.

In the same way that nearly all new cars are bought on some kind of credit, you would think that many new boats are also on some kind of marine mortgage. There are plenty people in the world for whom credit is a way of life and there is a saying along the lines that a man living within his means is not living at all. Certainly if you look at the boats.co.uk YT channel where they highlight various mobos that they are selling, James always discusses finance costs which suggests that it must be a common thing in that world.

Anyone into cars who gets on the pistonheads forum will soon encounter plenty of men of working age who financing Bentleys and Ferraris etc on tick.

Talking to Maranello Concessionaires about Ferraris a few years ago I was staggered to be told that 90% of their sales of cars, both new and used, were on finance. Now I know that finance is routine on new small cars but Ferraris are toys not transport!

Maybe I am the odd one out never having bought anything other than the house on credit.

Most people round here convert their garages into extra rooms often because they cant get rid of their adult kids. Then of course you end up with 5 cars pared half on the pavement

All newish are crap compared to pre 2000 .... Nearly as bad as the Leyland Metro tacky plus they've got rear ends larger than Gemma Collins

Well that is complete nonsense. Design standards have hugely improved, understanding of composites has transformed. Water permeability is hugely reduced.

On sailing boats, sailing performance is vastly better. If i go on a new Pogo then going back on my 70s cruiser is like a different sport.
On motorboats, hull shapes are far better with steps and improvements year on year.
As ever the demographics here doesn't hugely reflect the majority of new boat buyers. This forum is largely elderly retirees bemoaning how good things used to be.

Yes I'd definitely agree with the moaning bit unfortunately I'm not one of those ELDERLY retirees I just know that older boats were overkill constructed.. .. .A rizzla fag paper is thicker than most modern boats plus there god awful ugly fat arsed things

They were also packed full of voids in the layup which famously blister.

Yes agree so it's advisable you get a survey so you can knock that amount off to get it professionally repaired,if unviable run there's plenty of decent ones out there
