So what are the rules these days in Portsmouth?

Correct, an earler post implied it had a sign saying always leave to port.
The sign says "leave to port when entering or exiting via the inner swatchway".

I do not understand what all the discussion surrounding Ballast Beacon and the beacon at the eastern end of the Inner Swashway is about.

Everything is set out in detail in LNTM 42/05

The regulations concerning the small boat channel are also summarised in the LINK ALREADY GIVEN

Ballast Beacon close to port inbound or outbound

Inner swashway beacon is only of concern to users of the inner swashway when it is also left to port inbound and outbound.

The location of both are shown on THIS CHART

So it works in the same way as Ballast pile!

Vic, this is danger of turning into yet another IRPCS type post. I agree with you. It's very straight forward!

I think the point he is making that it works the same as ballast Pile only if you are using the Inner Swashway. If you are heading out of the harbour eastbound and not using the Inner Swashway then you leave that post to starboard.

Dave, I think he is suggesting that if proceeding outwards from ballast toward No4 Bar buoy you should leave the 'inner swashway' pile to port .

This means leaving the small boat channel and then rejoining it. no?

[/ QUOTE ]

I didn't see his post as saying that at all. If going out to No4 then that pile acts as a normal port lateral mark so it's left to starboard.

Anyway enough is enough. It's very clear as to what action is needed!

AFAIK there is no official western delineation of the Small Boat Channel (unless you count the Hamilton Bank and the shallows to the south thereof /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) The only hard & fast boundary is a line from No 4 Bar to Ballast Pile on the eastern side seperating the SBC from the Main Channel. Although a "channel" is shown on the two plotter charts posted by benjevbav & frontier (albeit both of different widths /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif), the definitive and official Eastern boundary is shown on the Admiralty Chart on the link posted by VicS. I know which one of the three I would believe! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We had occasion to speak to a yacht entering on the eastern side of the Main Channel earlier in the year who, when asked why he wasn't using the SBC, replied "My GPS plotter has not got that much detail" - truely amazing!!

The leaving of Ballast Pile to port had been in operation for at least 4 years. It was introduced so as to set up a "TSS" for boat entering and exiting Portsmouth Harbour via the small boat channel. As I said in an earlier post, the same applies to the beacon just outside the Harbour entrance.

[/ QUOTE ]
By chance, I was looking at a 2002 copy of the Shell Channel Pilot today and the current scheme was clearly introduced after that - the Inner Swashway "TSS" beacon was not in place then.

When either of these traffic control measures came into operation is immaterial but the Inner swashway beacon and its traffic flow scheme have been in place for several years. The fact that they are at the tail end of LNTM 42/05 suggests that they were introduced sometime in 2005.

The scheme around the Ballast beacon is I think a little older and was introduced when the old Ballast buoy was replaced with the beacon but it may also date from 2005.

The small boat channel itself has been in operation for ages, although not in the days when I had a mooring in Portsmouth. However before it was made official most small boats entered and left Portsmouth on the western side of the entrance especially if heading for the inner swashway.

All that some are saying is that it hasn't always been like that. No big deal...
