Shamed! Shamed by SWMBO pointing out how every other boat that she sees is beautifully clean and gleaming. Cinnamon, however, is dusty, muddy, cobwebby and a bit duck poo-ey... or it may be goose - my expertise, thankfully, is not in poo-analysis! :)

Does everyone else really spend their every waking hour washing, polishing and grinding or is there something akin to a magic bullet that I can buy?

Seriously, tho - what is the best product / combination of products to use to keep a gelcoat gleaming? We are the proud owners of a powerful jetwash... but I've never been persuaded that it actually does anything useful...

Pay someone to clean it for you/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Or you could use 3M Marine Liquid Wax.

Both of the above are expensive!!!

There are several types of Boaters. The Washers are one type, the Users another, there are other categories such as the Nevercumdowners. You obviously are a User and as such are one of the elite.
Do what I do..... pay someone.

Guardinage is the best cleaner, works well with very little effort if you fins the right variety and doesn't take up any of your time.

Farecla

Can't remember whether it's G3 or G4 compound suitable for GRP, but you get it from Motor Factors specialising in body repairs.

Comes in quite a large bottle, but pounds per litre is a fraction of the cost of marine compounds.

Dead easy to apply using a damp cloth, brings the colour back and the shine up.

Re: Farecla

G3 is the grade. Get it in a 2.5 ltr tub. About 15 quid is the going rate at the place I get it from. Should last blimmin' years at the rate I use it!

Pressure washer is great for duck/goose/swan poo removing! Then any good quality car shampoo, and wax polish is fine, marine equivalents are just re-badged/pricehiked car stuff!

Not sure the 3M stuff is car equivalent. I wouldn't use it on metallic paint, unless I knew what was in it, but it works wonderfully on gel coat. Removes surface crud, chalky white stuff , and puts a great shine on, though requires elbow grease or professional random orbital buffer. I haven't seen an automotive product that compares.

You will probably find, that the 3m product is a proffesional quality rubbing compound, used for all types of fibreglass/paint refurbishing, not just for marine use.

Can you name products. If I can obtain equivalent to 3m Marine products at a cheaper price, would be very happy

Sorry bruv! I just used to go down to brown brothers or similar pro vehicle supplies and ask for cutting/polishing compund, (different grades) and used that, it always worked for me. Actually brasso does a wonderful job aswell! Especially on perspex windows, we used to use goddards metal polish on the bubbles of the old sioux helicopters, great shine and removes any dead paint/perspex. Mer car polish works fine aswell, as does autoglym, but it's a little expensive.
When I was working down in Dartmouth, we used to use that GRProclean stuff, which works wondefully, but you need to degrease, with a good degreaser first, then apply the stuff as designed, then a good polish afterwards and it came up like new. Probably a far amount of phosphoric acid in it, aswell as oxalic.

Right - SWMBO's getting a print of this discussion!

OK - is there anything I should steer clear of... can't imagine something like T-Cut would be any good for gelcoat... that kinda thing...
