Checking over the lump I found snotty mayo lunps in the oil. With a curse and an eff here and there I dug the compression tester out of the tool box. All readings for all cylinders are within 5% of each other so the head gasket isn't the culprit.
Just to make sure I pressureized the cooling system 20 about 30 lbs and that held for a good couple of hours. So thats not leaking.
Run the thing up with indicator in the cooling. It didn't turn red so no combustion gases getting into the cooling at all.
Whipped off the oil cooler to check the seals in that. They seem ok and not leaking.

So a bit flumoxed as to what caused it. I drained the oil, filled with flushing oil and refilled with normal 15 40 semi and changed the filter. See how it goes.

Anyone got any ideas?

Well I thought that. Thats why I run the thing up with the indicator in it. Its not loosing and coolant either. Blocks cast iron with cylinder liners and the head is ali.

If I can't sort it I'll bung the other engine in. Then strip this one to have a closer look. Its been fine since I rebuilt the head a couple of years ago.

Could still be the head gasket. The metal rings around the cylinder holes are the strongest bit, the card/plastic/asbestos/goop between water and oilways are much more suspect.

hoo, thats what I'm secretly hoping, tho all breathers, well the only one, go into the airbox and flame arresters. Thats why I drained and flushed the engine oil ! I won't be running it this weekend but I'll give it a bit of a thrash next week as the speed limit gets lifted for the winter.........yippee!

boatless......hmm, thats the reason I pressure tested the cooling system. Can't actually see it being the head gasket as its held pressure and it not loosing coolant. I rebuilt the head a couple of years ago. New valves new seats etc etc.
Big snotty globs of mayo always worry me though. If its not water from the cooling system then its gotta be from somewhere. I've done every usual check, just wondered if anyone had any ideas
