Popped into a chandler last weekend thinking to buy a couple of snatch blocks ... have you seen the price of them lately? To be fair they only had Lewmars at some £140 and I know Bartons do them cheaper. Anyone know of any other 'good value' ones?

I have a ronstan snatch block which I got several years ago now.

ronstan equipment seem generally cheaper than lewmar or harken but I dont know what prices and availability are like in the UK

Snatch blocks come up all the time on eBay. I picked a 4 x Lewmar's for around a £100, good condition but obviously used. I also picked up a couple of smaller Barton ones as well for a very reasonable price. Check the Barton sprcifications and pictures on their web site / catalogue. eBay descriptions can be wrong on the working loads, but the picture will easily identify the correct model. I would recommend that you watch eBay.

They are cheaper because the snatch load is less. And theyy dont have the premimum brand on them

£331!!!

Bl**dy hell!! I have six Harken snatch blocks in a cupboard on the boat. They were used last two years ago when the spinnaker was last out. And they take up useful space which could better be used for storing bottles....

Just looked at the Wichard site and spotted their MX 'soft' blocks that they claim to have a snatch load of 1000Kg and breaking strain of 2000Kg; Seem to be a development of the soft shackle/light weight vogue so possibly a great deal cheaper than the St/Stl and delrin formats.

I can't resist them when they are cheap on eBay.

Do you need a real snatch block?
There are simple blocks with a pin and shackle that can be assembled onto a rope.

I've a collection of Harken 'Big Boat' gear, new and unused, I got from Old John Foulkes' Chandlery Barge at Bursledon quite some years ago. On the basis of the above, that's worth more than my boat and my pension fund combined...!
