We have a traditional 5 berth 26 foot snapdragon (5 berths in main cabin with heads and 2 shelves in forward cabin. We are considering converting the forward cabin into a permanent double bunk because at the moment the double bunk has to be made up by lowering the table in the main cabin.

Our main concern is that in removing the present structure, it will weaken the boat. Has anyone either (i) done this or (ii) know what impact it will have on the boat's strength and seaworthiness.

From memory, the interior furnishing of the Snap is based on a one piece GRP moulding that also serves to provide the structural rigidity of the hull.
Making a double berth forward should be readily achievable without any major surgery to the glassfibre, but if you do feel the need to cut her into bits - take great care to build in compensatory strength.
Designer David Felpham is still around, last heard of working at Prout who disappeared recently, but who could give you good advice.
