I have volvo penta MD31A which produces lots of smoke on starting and tick-over when warm. Also slight film of oil/diesel? from exhaust when warming up. No other obvious symptoms of a problem and appears to run perfectly.
Engine is 14 yrs old but only 1300 hrs when bought 12 mts ago, now 1600 hrs. Previous owner also had same concern 10 yrs ago - with correspondence with volvo - but no apparent solution.
Anyone similar problem and a possible explanation?

Needs a few more details, does it use engine oil? If so how much, could need an injector service which people generally forget. Could even need the pump serviced and retimed.
