smoke in bad weather

I noticed on Sunday that the transom was blackened by exhaust. The trip back from Yarmouth to Poole was quite heavy going, but SWMBO noticed a little (barely noticible) white smoke on the way over. The trip back was F5/6 and we made around 15-16 knots but the engines were working hard. Today we went to Lymmington and (had town Quay all to ourselves for a while) and lovely tip and hey presto no smoke. Someone did suggest that it may have been the Turbo's cutting in and out which caused the smoke but has anyone else experienced an increase in exhaust residue on the transom in bad weather.

The small amount of white smoke is still there but it may always have been as it is hardly noticable at all.

Chris , did you get the engines serviced as the air filters may need changing, you may get a slight build up with accelerating on and off but the engines should not white smoke when they are up to temp, was the wind behind you all the time as this could cause it, also did you get them revving above 3200 prm to keep the turbos in.

Yes, engines serviced. running less than 3200 so turbos were kicking in and out for a while until I realised and then went up in revs. Wind was from behind at times. Actually I am more concerned about white smoke even though it is barely perceptable. having noticed it now I am not sure if it has always been there.

Obviously there will be some exhaust emmision.

After the service, on the first run, I found we had a fuel leak which appears to be from the injectors and there seems to be some doubt as to wether the copper seating washers were replaced. The boat yard are replacing them. Also the tappits were adjusted as is required at this time. Could incorrect tappit adjustment cause white smoke?

Oil is clean(no emulsification) and up to level.

Engines are pulling full power and seem fine.

If you have underwater exhausts, it could be that the exhausts are lifting out of the water intermittently in lumpy water causing apparently more smoke but, for sure, the engines will be working harder as the boat drives up the face of a wave - in my boat you can see the rpm/speed drop
A lot of boats suffer from exhaust deposits on the transom caused by vortices created as the boat speeds through the air - a bit like the back of an estate car gets filthy. It could be that a combination of the engines working harder and the exhausts intermittently being above the waterline increases the effect

Re: Is white smoke just steam? NM

Could be but unlikely. There's a recent thread on this on PovertystrickenBoatOwner forum here. Aalso have a look at www.boatdiesel.com and follow the troubleshooing links. It tells you the most common and rarest reasons and cures for all sorts of problems. Depsol would probably recommend something though it seems that the stuff he's been using has burned a hole in one of his pistons <BG> Only joking Dom, don't sue me.

The only hole it has been burning is in your pocket as youve been dying to get some from over here cos its so much cheaper :)

Me no prob ever with smoke, transom is always clean rough or smooth seas.

Dont blame shoddy Volvo piston on Soltron it had done 165 hours in 17 months prior to that and was running at 34 knots on the way to the refuelling area.
