Smelly Boat??

Hello

I have a quick question for everyone I have a motor boat which has been shut up a long period of time. It has gone a little smelly does anyone know of a company that would come out and get rid of the smell??

There are marine valeting companies that do full internal cleans. The trouble is a smell inside a boat that has been shut up for a long time is usually is from it being damp....

1. Damp
a. From condensation
b. From bilges filled with salt water
2. Foul water/Holding tank
3. Waste pipes
4. Fuel / Diesel/Petrol Smell
5. or, most likely, all of the above

With a boat a lot of this stuff has to be a bit DIY, a marine valeting company will be excellent at compound polishers etc but probably not so adept at internal cleans. They would need to wet vac the upholstery and carpets which would get rid of the mildew smell unless it has gone into the foam of the cushions etc, then these just need to be bought out the boat and aired for a few days (Take advantage of the good weather!!).. Also after a wet vac the boat will be smelling great but even more damp... so the whole boat needs to be opened up and used & aired.

You need a company who will dry the boat out (if it is damp), empty the bilges, flush the waste system through, ensure engine room is clean as the smell of oil and fuel in the bilges will spread... Also does depend what part of the country you are in as to who you will be recommended ...not sure if any of this was helpful just my rambling thoughts...I haven't even given a recommendation of who to call......sorry!

as Firefly says, a dehumidifier is a good start. I'd also liberally dose the bilges and anywhere else that looks suspect with pet deodoriser from the pet shop. It's cheap enough - just bosh it in the bilges neat.

Many thanks for your replies, I have found a company who claim to be able to eradicate the smells onboard and not mask them. They also claim it wont make the boat wet through, any thoughts??

Hmm, that'll be a carpet shampooer, a lot of mildew remover spray, a dehumidifier and several bottles of pet odour remover then. How much do they want for all this treatment, cos it ain't really rocket science?

Good idea, but not everyone has access to one of these... the one we have to put in vehicles was just under £500...and a commercial one. Not sure the size you would need to put in a boat... but I would think the cost would be substantial. Also it would get rid of the smell so long as all the boat is dry.

...if its still damp then very soon the smell will return.
