Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that hires small yachts (say under 30') around the UK coast? Seems everywhere I look its all 35'+ cruisers that cost an arm and a leg to charter unless you can fill all the berths.

I'm struggling to find anywhere you can charter something more reasonable priced if there's only 2 or 3 on board and you don't need 8 berths. Smallest I've found is some lovely looking gaff sloops for hire on the Norfolk Broads but not exactly what I had in mind!

Any advice would be appreciated.

The cost of codifying a small yacht for chartering is prohibitive. I own and run a Nich' 26 and to bring it up to "industry" standard wrt safety and navigation equipment would cost in excess of £2500 and Snark is not ill equipped as she stands. The basic cost of doing the work for a 36'er is not much more and the returns very much greater. I doubt you'd find anyone with something much smaller for bareboat charter.

there's one in Southampton from universal yachting called teasel a 26' Holman (or at least they used to last year) might be worth calling them they're quite helpful and may know other similar boats.

Cornish Cruising were talking about a 32 footer, don't know if it ever happened though:

Mylor have a Leisure 20

On the Helford they have Drascombe day sailors.

By comparison, I had the Voile, Brittany supplement last year and was stuck how many nice small boats were available for charter in Brest, St Malo, Lorient etc

The Bavaria used to be owned by a member of the forum...

A while ago I tried to find out if there is a minimum size for coding. There are plenty of Wayfarers for hire, for example, and my Hunter 490 is only 3" longer. Likewise - to take your example - a Drascombe Longboat is longer than a Corribee.

Unfortunately neither the RYA nor the MCA responded to my enquiries, so I don't know the answer.

I know someone who successfully coded a Victoria 800 (26' LOA) - not prohibitively expensive, but not trivial.

Thanks for all the responses everyone, some useful links there.

That little Leisure 20 might be a laugh for a weekend teaching the other half a bit of sailing.

It's a shame the coding makes it difficult for smaller craft, bigger yachts are great if there's a few of them but they're just unnecessarily big and expensive for a couple or smaller crew etc.

Some twenty odd years ago, we had several yachts between 26 and 32 feet that we managed on charter. The coding and the insurance actually wasn't that bad. What cost most were suitable Marina berths to keep them or at least hand over and hand back. Moving boats from moorings in and out of marinas got to be a real pita, so we stopped. Very popular boats but time intensive for us.

Doesn't help the OP I know, but Mebbe gives some perspective on why not many are available.

There is this one not far from me https://www.nessandmorayyachtcharters.co.uk/

But for not a lot more than the cost of a weeks charter in high season, I know where you could buy outright a 21ft yacht. Use it for your holiday and sell it again?

I think the problem with buying a yacht like that would be that I don't trust myself to sell it, I'd end up wanting to keep it and spend more money on it!

Just seen a brand new Cornish Crabber 24 being taken out on charter from Mylor Marina. Perfect for 2, ok for 3. Don’t know who owns it but the marina will know.
