Small Ships Register

I never had the home port on the transom, just the boat name and SSR number, and on the bows the name only.

I had no problems, or even have anyone tell me the home port should be there, in the UK, France, Channel Islands, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Åland, Finland, Estonia or Latvia. I'm not saying that complies or doesn't comply with any foreign local regulations though. Perhaps I was lucky.

It was different for my previous boat which was Part 1 registered so had both the name and port of registry (not home port) on the transom as I seem to recall was compulsory.
Agreed. Our ‘home port’ isn’t on our transom and we’ve visited 23 countries and counting without anyone questioning it.

With any respect due this is a silly comment.

Whilst what you say about profiteering endeavours may be true in other circumstances, maintaining the SSR database and website costs money. Salariies need to be paid of those who do the work. Buildings where they work cost money. Etc.

Of course if you think you can do it cheaper, offer a privatisation/takeover bid to the government as a cost saving measure. Good luck.
The register was indeed run externally for some time after it was introduced, but was brought in house because nobody would take it at contract renewal based on at the fee that was being charged.

I think home port to be displayed is in international regs. About 15 years ago, 24 boats were impounded in yard we use, for not having home port and/or name on transoms. Can't remember whether police or customs did it but it was said officer involved was fresh out of training school:(
Yes, we had the same problem up in Portimao around that time. I stuck the name of my village in England on the back which no one over in Portugal had ever heard of. They were happy with that. My village is 40 miles from the nearest sea. lol

Rather proves my point then.
Yes I was supporting you - never sure why people moan about it when we have the cheapest and simplest registration system in Europe and possibly the world. And it is not compulsory unless you want to go outside the UK. Some don't seem to appreciate how lucky we are with our limited regulations.

Thank you.

Unfortunately there are people who simply like to moan. Nothing is ever good enough or cheap enough etc.
