It's hot in Spain right now and we were discussing the possibility of getting a tiny freezer on board, just big enough to produce enough ice for the G&Ts. 240v is fine. Any recommendations?

Get a small Vevor portable .... can be used as freezer of fridge .... also able to run from 12v .... good for picnics / BBQ's .... etc.

I bought the 40L version recently .......... one of the best decisions I've made for ages ....

I have a 12V compressor coolbox from ebay.
It will freeze, but I use it to store ice rather than make ice.

Some of the passive coolboxes are very good, they will store ice for several days.
They cost nearly as much as the £200 or so I paid for my compressor model.

Peak current draw is about 3A, average over a hot day maybe 1A.

Alpicool are good value compressor coolboxes that come in different sizes, I used one as a fridge but they'll freeze. Usual outlets...

Love our Alipcool C20. 1/3rd of the price of a Dometic (Waeco). Struggles a bit to reach -18c but runs less often when we set it to -15c. Froze a litre of water overnight. Insulation a bit thin on all these fridge freezers, so we keep a bath towel over the top less the vents which does help. 20L was enough space for a full Christmas dinner ingredients for the two of us.

Another vote for Waeco/Dometic - they come in all sizes and can be used as a fridge or freezer.

I might have this all wrong but if you already have a fridge then buying a second item (whatever size or make) is not going to be as efficient (use of amps) as a unit that is a fridge/freezer. But a small unit means you can 'freeze up' at home which will save your amps if only for weekend use. But maybe you 'make' more amps than you can use.

An alternative is to give up the G&T and move up market and drink decent malt whisky the flavour of which you will destroy with ice. :)

We already have a fridge on board and, these days, we only day sail around the Bay. The rest of the time we're on shore power so current draw isn't an issue.

I used to be a whisky drinker but a few years ago I started to get bad hangovers from dark spirits so moved to gin!

Pal of mine has a Dometic (WAECO name was dropped) .... and compared it overall to my Vevor ... difference ? Price !

When not on boat - my Vevor provides cold beer by the river at BBQ's ..... sits near my desk when working (I drink mostly non-alcohol beer now .. I know terrible ...)

Its powered on literally 24/7 and I just note the low hum from it when compressor is active ...

My 'new' boat has a compressor built in fridge box ... so the Vevor will be used as a 'freezer' unit for those longer Baltic sorties ... or when we have evening cocktails on board !!

Back in this thread again. The Alpicool C9 seems perfect for us with a small footprint and AC/DC input for a good price. Anyone have any experience of them and what's the difference between the C9 and the C9P? Do they come with a mains charger? I have messaged Alpicool but, as they're in California, it's going to be a while before I get a reply, if ever.

Update: We ordered the Alpicool C9 from Amazon Spain and it was delivered to the marina. I have to say it's the mutt's nuts and I regret not buying one years ago. Only 9L capacity but that's enough for a bag of ice, a wine cooler wrap and some ice cream. It fits nicely in the aft cockpit locker where it plugs straight into the shore power socket. As my post above, we don't have space for anything bigger but anyone who does have the space could do worse. No connection etc., etc.,
