Small Cold Chisel?

I've managed to remove a stubborn nut by drilling into the top of it parallel to the alternator shaft it was screwed on. I then sharpened a bit of 5mm steel bar and drove it into the edge of the nut, which split. There was only a narrow gap between the nut and the pulley, so I couldn't use a cold chisel, I had to sharpen the bar every few hits.

Should I need to do this ever again, I would like a small cold chisel, about the size of a 5mm flat screwdriver. I've looked on eBay, can't find any under 10mm. Perhaps I'm looking for the wrong thing?

How about a suitably sharpened/shaped centre punch?

What about a small screwdriver, the type that can double up as a chisel such as http://www.screwfix.com/p/screwdriver-set-go-thru-6pc/11087 There are other makes etc.

Have you considered buying the proper tool? A nut-splitter is what you need. You will also be avoiding all the blows from the hammer which don't do the stud and the rest of the item - in your case, the alternator - much good. This is how it works:





There are other brands from which to make your choice.

Nut splitters are really restricted in where you can use them. You need good all-round clearance for the "anvil" and better access for the long end with the driving spike and bolt.

Grind down a 10mm one so its 5mm ?

Look up Stonemason chisels, they comein small sizes for letter cutting/carving. http://shop.g-gibson.com/chisels-13-c.asp

My FIL was a stonemason, when he died he left literally hundreds in his tool kit. I kept a selection, with the remainder with his fitted tool cabinet going to Canterbury Cathedral's Masons dept.
