Small arms on a yacht?

:encouragement:

There are a lot of armchair experts on here whose contributions even a Daily Mail journalist might find embarrassingly ignorant.

Har har how I agree. Wonder how many have ever fired a shot in anger with he intention of killing another human being?

It is a little reasuring that pirates firearms are so delapidated. I'm still not sure I'd be willing to take the risk though. I think my best defence against piracy will still be to avoid going there.

I have just found this,
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa...ce_on_Firearms_Licensing_Law_Nov_2015_v16.pdf

New sections covering emerging issues related to firearms and shotgun licensing. For example new guidance for applicants who wish to possess firearms on UK registered ships in a response to the risk of piracy.1

I think depriving them of their father would be the least of my worries. I would consider him just scum.
As for murder , in some parts of the world it is perfectly legal to kill someone, in self defence, carrying out an illegal act. For instance in Kenya it is Ok to kill a poacher. In fact Robert - the retired harbour master from Ostend- claimed to have done just that. I recall that he was disappointed he could not do the same in Ostend. So I suspect similar laws apply elsewhere.
If you did kill a pirate would you actually go into the nearest port & start bragging about it?

So another person with magical abilities that can tell if someone is a threat or not.

....WHO HAD JUST TRIED TO ROB YOU.!!!
Yes, it would be hugely regrettable, but I & my family would still be alive.!
His mistake, not mine.

Good grief. What planet do you live on? If he had just tried to rob you are a bit late producing a firearm! It's a real world out there you know, not bloody Hollywood.

I think grumpy was suggesting a scenario where a trigger-happy yachtsman shot someone who may have looked like a pirate but was in fact something else. You can ignore this suggestion if you plan to sail only in areas where pirates wear eye-patches and a parrot on one shoulder under a Jolly Roger flag. Meanwhile, in the real world...

Thanks you. I'm glad it's not just me...

What are the risks now and where? please?

Gulf of Guinea and Singapore/Malaya

The East African pirates have a different 'business model' than their Somali counterparts.
Somalis used to capture vessels and crew and hold them for ransom.
East African pirates have no interest in crew or ships but just want to plunder the cargo.
Usually they are never longer aboard than 1-2 days - they tend to disappear long before any grey funnel line ships show up.

I am not familiar with the situation in Asia as it's way outside our area of operations.

If you bother to read the guidance notes you linked to earlier, you'll find that the notes define the areas that the government considers to be at risk.......

As per usual, government documents are seriously of of date by the time they are published.
There hasn't been an incident of piracy on the Gulf of Aden/Arabian Sea since May 2013.

To kill someone usually leaves a psychological mark of some description.

Maybe, but it'll only affect him for a couple of seconds. And don't worry, most of us that have lived in Africa for 20+ years & been robbed many times are already psychologically affected. The right way.!
